Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons
I felt like I had to be rich just to read the description. When you see such literary finesse expelled on a vehicle description it translates to me, "Gonna runya big bucks buddy".
Such a cool car. My dad had a '70 Coupe de Ville I enjoyed taking out for a cruise. If I spend big bucks on a classic luxury wagon I want to be able to bring along a lot of friends

We were talking about these Pontiacs in the other thread about cool old cars. Here's a hot little grocery getter

Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons
I had a '62 Tempest wagon like that. The were originally transaxles with a rope drive ( fiberglass drive shaft to the transaxle), Obviously, that has had a 4 link rear put in it. Mine had leaf spring hangars welded on, and in place of the original 4 cyl. I had a 327 and a 3 speed manual, and a ford 9". I bought it as a project and finished it. These cars have no frames - just a unit body stamped floor pan. Not really good solid welding points for hanging rear leafs as I found out after tearing the axle off the fabricated spring mounting points.

I'd roll this to the grocery store.

Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons
I'd drive that, but not to the grocery store. Although, one day at my Safeway was a street-prepped and registered '57 Chevy pro-mod in the parking lot. yep, full race chassis, 'glass body, air brushed bumpers and lights.
Mr. Carbuyer: I want a Corvette Mrs. Carbuyer: But I need a station wagon solution:

Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons
Ok Ok, fast wagons are cool. But let's get back to the topic of early Tempest grocery getters
On second thought, I'd rather switch topics to drag wagons

Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons
I've never quite got station wagons as drag cars, or any big car for that matter. I'm no engineer but it seems that the extra weight would be exactly what you wouldn't want.
My mom had one of these,

Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons
More weight over the rear wheels for traction, maybe ???

Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons
Yep, traction. I always thought the same, Paul. Not just drag cars, factory muscle land yachts. Why run a big block Impala when you can run a big block Nova? The name of the game before better tires were available was find traction. That's why gassers were jacked up in the front with lighter straight axles. Weight transfer. Then there were the altered class cars, rear axle shifted forward to help dump the weight over the rear wheels. Today we have bigger and better slicks and narrowed rears.
Then and now

Re: Pic Thread: Station Wagons
I know of a 64 Bonneville 421 4-speed 4 door station wagon. owner never calls back, imagine that ?. I never took a picture but it looked all stock and unrestored in an old storage shed. the owner liked 421 2+2 cars. thanks again for all pics in a cool thread.
