Neutral Safety Switch on 66 standard steering column and a 700R4?

Is this neutral safety switch supposed to be on a standard column with a 700r4 swap? I had this one on the column before and to my knowledge it was operating fine. I am rewiring the truck with the AAW classic rebuild kit and I wasn't sure if this is part is what I should have, a custom shop local to me years back did the swap and left it there and I just want to be sure. If its correct I want to replace it with a new one, just wanted to be sure its correct before I did.

In comparing it to my setup it certainly looks to be correct:
66 Suburban
700R4
Tilt column

I recently replaced my NSS with a new one. Used below steps to adjust:
1. Loosen NSS bolts on column just enough to move it
2. Turn ignition key to "on" position (not run)
3. Shift into reverse position
4. When reverse lights come on lightly snug bolts on NSS
5. Attempt to start vehicle in P and N
6. Once everything is adjusted snug NSS bolts

I used the AAW kit. I had enough left over from the optional extras that I don't have to do another truck nearly.

I have a 700r4 in mine and I got the Lokar kit. Works fine.

Thanks! Good to know another 700r4 setup works properly. Mine had this switch and the shop that put the 700r4 in for me didnt change it and the reverse lights worked fine. I just wanted to be sure since I saw examples like dmulally shows below.

I wonder what the difference (besides location) is by having the switch on the column or on the trans?

I think as long as it works it probably doesn't matter.

I went for the gearbox mounted one as it was only a matter of routing the wiring from the starter wire and back again. Was a 10 minute exercise.

Re: Neutral Safety Switch on 66 standard steering column and a 700R4?

4 years later, just getting back to where I left off.

I am trying to figure out what is best to do on this. Years before the teardown I had paid a local shop thats no longer in business to replace the powerglide with a 700R4. They did and everything worked great, big improvement.

The goal was to replace the wiring so I have been installing an AAW wiring kit and when it comes to the neutral safety switch Im not sure what the shop did long ago. From what I see they left the steering neutral safety switch wired up as it was with only the back up lights connector attached.

From my other reference pics, the only wiring I see on the transmission is what I think is a pressure sensor after searching the manufacturer of the part

I have a new Neutral Safety switch installed on the steering column, just like it was before and wasnt sure what was best to do with the wiring. Does that pressure sensor in the pic I'm attaching have anything to do with the neutral safety switch?

I'm going to guess that is a vacuum switch to control TCC lock-up.

I'm also going to guess they only hooked up the reverse light switch. And, ignored the neutral safety switch section.

Re: Neutral Safety Switch on 66 standard steering column and a 700R4?

I just got off the phone with AAW and that was also his thought. I was seeing wires and was not sure if it had anything to do with the neutral safety switch.

Since there did not seem to be any other wires on the transmission I assume the shop by passed it. AAW tech had a theory that since the new transmission possibly caused the shift indicator to not line up correctly they by passed it.

I dont know if I should wire up the 2 tabs with the AAW neutral wires as they have indicated onto the part I have, or look into the Lokar part to do the neutral safety switch and have my part just connect the rear lights?

Re: Neutral Safety Switch on 66 standard steering column and a 700R4?

If it were mine I would hook up the neutral safety switch already on the steering column. It can be adjusted if needed. You can test it by connecting the 2 tabs to a multimeter and put in ohms or continuity test function, and shift through the gears. If it gives you continuity in park and doesn't give continuity in reverse and drive, you will know it will work to block the key start signal to the starter when you're in gear.
