LS1/T56 installed!
Ladies and gentlemen, it is finally in. I still have some motor mount issues with the vette headers to work out but it is VERY CLOSE. I can feel it now.
Next up is a custom shifter for the 6 speed, having my LS1 driveshaft lengthened and working in the hydraulic clutch linkage. Almost, almost...

What does it take to get one of those transmissions hooked up behind a pre-86 350sbc? I want the 6 speed, but I don't want to have to deal with all the new "fang dangled" computer stuff on multi-port injected engines.

That is cool. I haven't seen anyone else with an LS1 and a 6-speed yet. I'm going old school with a 454/th400 combo in my 67, but I'm sure yours will do a burnout just as well as mine!!!!

The fuel injection stuff is the beauty of the monster IMHO. However you can hook up a T56 6 speed easily with a LT1 six speed tranny (93-97) F-Body if you are using an older block setup.

I especially like the .49 final gear of the 6 speed (or is that only the six speed in the corvette?). With a final drive of .49 you can get away with 4.10's easily.

I think there are a lot of us that would like to have this set up- myself included. There's nothing like rowing thru the gears with a nice sounding set of pipes, especially if you're a former "double clutchin fool from the motor pool" Keep us posted on the progress. luv those headers!

For all you guys(me included) who want a carb instead of messing with computers and wiring, there are now intakes available for LS1's that are for a four barrel carb. I think Chevy makes them now, I just saw it in a magazine somewhere. The LS1 makes a lot of power, I have had a 98 Z28 1LE and a 2000 Z28 and they were a blast, but they wont have the torque that a nicely built big block would have, but they will rev a lot quicker and higher.

It really wasn't that expensive of a swap. I paid $800 for the motor (ok I know it was a steal) and $1000 for the complete 6 speed and driveshaft, shifter, clutch etc. There is definatly ALOT of misc crap you have to do before it runs but it's under $1500. All in all I think it is just as cheap as any other build up. Figure that you will spend AT LEAST $2500 for a healthy SBC carbed and another $1000 for a good tranny and stall...

You can get aftermarket ignition system that will work with the coil on plug ignition the LS1 has. Also, step up the power with a LS6 conversion kit to get over 400 hp. Its expensive, like $2,300, but you get the complete heads, intake, cam, rockers , gaskets, etc. to do the whole thing. Make sure you get a 00 up LS1. I know for sure that the 98 blocks can not be bored over but the later ones can. If you scuff a liner in the newer blocks it can be bored out and reused, the 98 blocks can't(this is in the F bodies, not sure about the 97-98 Vette blocks). The Chevy SS is a joke compared to the Lightning and even more compared to the SRT Ram, 500 hp 500 ft/pounds tprque with a real transmission, a manual six speed. Plus the Chevy is ugly in my opinion. The Lightning is supposedly going to be offered with more power and a manual trans also within a couple years from what I have heard. Wish Chevy would actually build something that would compete with those other two trucks.

I just looked at the pictures closer, that looks like a cast iron block with some rust starting. If thats a cast iron block its not the true LS1, its a LS1 design but with either 4.8, 5.3, or 6.0 liter displacement. The LS1 in the Vette and F bodies are all aluminum from top to bottom. It displaced 5.6 liters or 346 cubic inches. If you got the 6.0 you got a good engine though, you can put a stroker kit in them and make them huge and the cast iron block is stronger for the abuse a truck would give them.

yeah it's a gen iii LS1 motor. If you read the thread I said 6.0l LS1. Whatever LS6 kit you are looking at is a waste of money. They heads are almost identical to the basic LS1 but they do have .5 higher CR. For way less than that you can make over 400 horse (cam/springs and long tubes). The 4.8, 5.3, 5.7, 6.0 use almost identical heads (at least in design) the main difference is the CC, valve size, bore. The intakes swap over on all motors. so do the majority of the internals minus the pistons obviously. Even the cam specs in my 6.0 motor are the same as the 2001-2002 LS1. The valve train is identical. Not sure where you get 5.6 liter? It is actually 5669.9 CC which is rounds to 5.7.
So how does the aftermarket ignition get the trigger signal? I'm sure there is a aftermarket one available however the point being that it would be way more expensive than wiring the EFI up. Check out Keiser engineering for a modified 6 speed tranny that will let you move the shifter location forward and use the stock consoul on your Chevelle. They sell the whole tranny package or you can have your modified for 699. ouch. I'd have to agree that the SS is the slower of the bunch. However this is factored to the weight and AWD. The SRT 10 is a $h!tty truck for the money. They run 13.9's at the track with 500 horse??? The Lightnings run alot better and the SS being HALF the money runs slightly behind the SRT 10.
