72 Chevy Truck Key Switch Removal
I have a 72 chevy truck that I lost the key for. I have a new key switch coming and am wondering how to get the old switch out if I don't have the old key. Is drilling it out the only way? Thanks for any help. Ron.

Re: 72 Chevy Truck Key Switch Removal
Do you think it's the original? Did it match the doors?

I am also wondering if the doors were keyed the same as the ignition. If they were, pull the passenger door lock out and see if there is a code number stamped into it. If there is I can cut a key from the code number. Picture of code location below. LockDoc

Re: 72 Chevy Truck Key Switch Removal
Ya, if your key used to work for the door and ignition, totally give what Doc says try. He got me a new set of GM keys and a matching glove box lock too (though he had me go pulling the ignition for the number code but you can only do that if you have the key).
He it totally the best! BTW, I hope you are doing well Doc!

Re: 72 Chevy Truck Key Switch Removal
I don't know if the door is keyed the same cause I didn't get the right keys with the truck when I bought it.

If there is no code number on the lock to try making a key from, drilling the ignition cylinder out is about the only way to do it. For a temporary fix you can unplug the wire loom connector from the back of the switch and plug in a different switch and let it hang under the dash. If you have to drill it start with an 1/8th inch bit and work your way up. Put a piece of tape on the bits about 3/4" up and don't go any deeper than that. Go slow so the bit doesn't catch and break off in the hole. Keep the loose pieces dug out and after you get to about 1/4 or 3/8" put a screw driver in the lock and turn it back and forth to try and get it loosened up. If you get it to turn to the left go ahead an insert the paper clip in the hole and see if it will turn to the left enough to pull it out. Use a small hook tool or dental pick to pull on it after you get it turned. Let me know how it goes. LockDoc

Re: 72 Chevy Truck Key Switch Removal
I need to get a new key for mine made (different than the ignition key). Fortunately, by good friend and next door neighbor has a huge key set by vehicle make, in this case the GM keys, in every cut - so he will try the keys until he finds the one to make for me. Kind of cool seeing that big ring of keys when he breaks them out!
