I can’t be the only one

I can’t be the only one who starts a project and then let’s it go way overkill from what I started out to do. I recently decided to redo the front and rear suspension on my 71 GMC. After taking off the suspension and steering I figured I’d powder coat the control arms and rear trailing arms. Then it snowballed into pulley, brackets and air cleaner and such. Then inner fenders and radiator support. Rear main is leaking a bit so I’m already that far. If that’s coming out might as well send the engine mounts, crossmember and trans crossmember.

Re: I can’t be the only one

On my 65 G10 van it went from simple suspension rebuild to completely modded. The engine, and tranny swap are on the simple side.

My Camaro has been in on/off project phase for a few years. Yet has had 3 different engines which have been graciously donated to other projects. Including my C10 engine swap.

Will I learn yes. But I ignore the results because I am tired of high payments, and ugly cars. I need simple. A simple 450hp truck. As simple as that. One that I can fix while I promise never to do this to myself again, but I lie alot to myself.

I kept trying to talk myself out of going further but it I kept thinking “since I’m here”. I did this with a VW squareback years back. I did a quick paint job to sell it in 2004 but after the 2 Ds( deployment and divorce) I started working on it again. While putting a new wiring harness in my foot went through the fiberglass repair in the floor from a previous owner. It ended up with the body off and hardware all plated and everything painted. Slippery slope

Re: I can’t be the only one

What's project creep? I left the drivetrain and suspension alone but tore the cab and front end apart, welded in the new steel, and painted it in 30 days. That included reassembly and me redoing the wiring harness. Luckily it was a daily driver so I could say good enough. I did cheat and already had the doors done before tear down. That was an 18 hour a day marathon but it was all the time I had so it had to be done on time since I took vacation and did the work 7 hours from where I was living and the truck was my daily driver.

Seriously though the best way to avoid project creep is to keep it mobile, even if it's not a daily driver. Most things can be done over a weekend other than final body work and paint. This method let's you find the issues ahead of time and allows you to adjust for it. The second you stop using this method the project will scream to a halt. Also when this happens the checkbook tends to come out alot more. Face the fact that there are some really nice rides here but I don't know of to many Concourse restorations going on. Just my thoughts and advice.

Re: I can’t be the only one

I’m just waiting on for my powder coating to be done next week. Hopefully my hardware will be done at the players next week or week after. Rear end is out and cleaned up waiting for paint. Gas tank and all lines are out now too. I’ve been spending a few hours each morning scrubbing the underside and framerails. I don’t hunk I’ve convinced myself that I don’t need to drop the frame although it’s really close and would be much easier to paint. I am going to paint the firewall since a color change is in the plans so no better time than now for that. Luckily my wife just kind of shakes her head when I talk about my plans for it😎

The term is " sensuous". Sensuous is already in there, then you might as well do all of the rest.

At least you do not have many layers of a rusty onion to peel back.

Re: I can’t be the only one

It has the normal rocker rust. Other than that not too bad. I hen I get the electrical set up in the garage I can start on that. All in all it’s not too bad though.
