Re: Wife's 48
Sounds about normal. That's wrenching for sure.
But it is progress, keep pushing forward!

Re: Wife's 48
Awesome you got the engine running. Now the trans. Fluid level check? Sometimes the cooler and piping takes more volume than expected and since the engine was taking priority possibly the fluid check was missed? Then when trans is placed in gear, a new trans will use a little more volume to fill clutch application piston bore areas. It's good to go through the shifter gears so forward and reverse clutch packs can each fill and release then check fluid after giving the trans some off time to disperse bubbles in the fluid from all the spots that had to fill up with fluid and push air out to do that, torque converter, pump cavity, valve body, clutch pack pistons, cooler and lines, etc. Dont sweat it yet, could be just low on fluid or the fluid foamed up from all the air.

Re: Wife's 48
Thank you both.
Outlaw, yes it was progress to get the it running and ultimately pretty smooth with the timing set better. That's why I didn't panic on the tranny. Raven, thank you for the advice. I hadn't thought about all of the things you pointed out, so I'm not in full panic mode yet. One of the things is the tranny cooler isn't in place, the two lines run to the front and have a hose connecting them, one to the other. However there is a kink in that hose you made me think about that could be restricting fluid. We did check level prior to trying, but didn't get into anything else on the tranny as they wanted to lock up the shop and go home Friday. MONDAY I will get back on the tranny see if it can be coerced into gear.

Re: Wife's 48
Yeah, good plan. Fix the link, check the fluid. Try it again. If the fluid was foamed up it should have settled by Monday. Another thing to check is if it has the correct dipstick length.
If it simply has a rubber tube instead of a cooler, for start up or mock up whatever, you can possibly pull one end of the tube off and maybe install another short tube on the other pipe. Run those into a bucket and do a quick start up to see if the trans is pumping fluid.one of those lines should spew the other will be the return line. Good to mark the line that spews so you can connect the cooler properly as far as in/out. I would try the start up/fluid level check first though. Possibly it was just really low or full of bubbles that dont work well in a hydraulic scenario. Like air in a brake line, it doesnt apply pressure well. |

Re: Wife's 48
Thank you. I've never torn into a transmission and don't know much about them, and I appreciate the suggestions.

No problem man. I am sure you have encouraged, given kudos, advised and generally uplifted those you contact on these forums. It's a give as you can and take as you need scenario. I haven't met a hotrodder or car guy yet who isnt willing to give some kudos, parts, info, advice or direction to a brother or sister hotrodder, car guy or somebody broke down on the road.

Re: Wife's 48
I'm an old Mopar guy so this might be totally useless information, but after a rebuild on any of the three or four speed rear wheel drive Mopar transmissions you started by letting the engine idle with the transmission in neutral, not park. You let it run for a while, cycle it through the gears, and then check per the instructions that were printed on the tranny dipstick. Good luck with it and I hope the solution is a simple one.

Re: Wife's 48
Well, bad news and GREAT NEWS!
First, the tranny was destroyed, it's now a core and the torque converter was trashed. When I put it together I didn't get the torque converter completely seated. I got two "clunks" but not the third. Then the good news started. They had a built 4L60 they had ordered for another guy and he never picked it up. So I got the RTI built tranny and a new higher stall torque converter and that took care of that problem. A couple more issues, like leaking coolant from the intake, which stopped after a little more time running. Adjusted the carb a little, and it runs good. The paint is finished and doors are on, so nothing left to do but YEP, bring it home! 01900f9736f0f404829125c9d6fdb75d5eb50987f1 by Robert Moorman, on Flickr That's Laura's reflection in the door. If you clink the link you can hear it run with open headers! Laura really likes the lope from the cam!!! Then loaded on the trailer. 0152053247c4ef8eb02613bf5524f22389e14152cf by Robert Moorman, on Flickr And Bob's your uncle, here it is at home where I can get to work on it. IMG_0932 by Robert Moorman, on Flickr Although that won't be today because I have to go pick up the 1946 Jeep CJ 2A that I helped my Dad rebuild. We 3 kids talked about it and neither of the other two wanted it, so I bought it from the estate to keep it in the family. No pictures yet, but I'll post one up when I get it home. I know, I know, this is a Chevy site, but maybe you all can forgive me one gratuitous picture of a sentimental CJ.

Re: Wife's 48
Glad you've got it home Robert!
Let's see the Jeep, I had a CJ3B with an F-Head engine(had the taller hood) and a rear PTO.

Re: Wife's 48
Thank you guys.
I'm really excited to get started on assembly, wiring and finish up. I hope to be driving it by spring. I know, don't set deadlines because life will jump up and bite you. That's why I said "hope". Yeah, as soon as I got it on the trailer they repossessed my seat!

Re: Wife's 48
Congratulations! It looks beautiful! I’m itching to get back to mine but I’m taking care of my 83 year old mother right now. Hopefully she will get back on her feet soon, in the meantime I live vicariously through everyone’s progress. Keep up the good work

Wow Moving right along, I also like the lope. It’s nice when they can move on their own power and the green looks great.

Re: Wife's 48
Thanks Kermit. The wife wants to run it with open headers because she likes the lope so much. I looked at electric cut outs and I'm pretty sure when she sees the price she is going to change her mind.
Jan, I feel your pain. I've been handling Dad's estate. Getting back on the truck is a reprieve! I'm looking forward to actually putting some bolts in PAINTED metal.

Re: Wife's 48
OK, a couple shots of the 46 Jeep CJ2A.
IMG_9533 by Robert Moorman, on Flickr IMG_0934 by Robert Moorman, on Flickr Couple of fun facts: It was owned by my Dad's best friend from highschool. They graduated in 1949. He got it in the 60's to be a hunting vehicle. When his oldest son, my age, started highschool they added an aluminum top and doors so Tommy could drive it to school. Then about 15 years ago, Delroy gave it to Dad because it was the year model and color of the one Dade drove when he got his driver's license. So that's when I helped Dad restore it. It has no brakes! I think the master cylinder is shot. I'll start there. Also, I got the top and doors. The windows were plastic, cloudy and broken out. Also, there are dings in all of the aluminum. So I guess I'll have to figure out how to work aluminum after the 48 is on the road.

I like the color! Mine was baby blue with a white top. Great back story on the Jeep.

Re: Wife's 48
Thank you. My wife really likes it. I took her for a short drive when we got it home. With NO brakes, that was an interesting ride.
Oh, did I mention it has the turning radius of my F350 crew cab?
