1969 - 1970 Grill Insert & Shell - NOS
This is a '69-'70 inner & outer, new old stock, grill insert and shell. I've had these for several years. I had planned to use them on a restoration project, but never did. They've been in the box since I got them. The first (and only) time I got them out of the boxes were to take pictures of them. I do have more pictures, but could only put 5 pictures on.
I'm asking $1800 for the pair. No shipping, must be picked up. First "I take it", gets it. |

Re: 1969 - 1970 Grill Insert & Shell - NOS
Just letting you and any potential buyers know there is a difference between 69 and 70. It’s only a visual difference as the plastic inner was different in the pattern but do interchange. Only truely relevant if someone wants a 100% correct restoration. Again not to cause problems but prevent a potential issue of it not matching perfectly unexpectedly.

Re: 1969 - 1970 Grill Insert & Shell - NOS
The GM replacement inner grilles can be found in two styles all silver (1969) and black with horizontal silver raised ridges (1970), both under the same part number. You always have to open the box to see what's inside. The aftermarket replacement grilles are all the same, all silver, 1969 but have the raised ridges so you could paint it to look like a 1970 grille.
There are also differences between a factory installed 69-70 outer grill. They are both identical from the factory but there have been a few slightly different designs offered by GM and the aftermarket over there years. The exact design of a original factory installed 69-70 outer grille has never been offered by anyone as a replacement part. Not even GM. If you search the forum you can find examples of the differences. As a note, neither of the pics I posted below have the correct factory installed outer grille. I only posted them as examples of the different inner grilles. This information usually only matters to a purist. See below pics for examples. Red Truck = 1969 Dark Green Poly Truck = 1970 Last edited by cericd; 10-25-2021 at 12:47 PM. |

Re: 1969 - 1970 Grill Insert & Shell - NOS
Decided to save you the search time in case you're interested in the outer grille info.
The horizontal lines of an OEM factory installed Chevrolet 69-70 outer grille extend almost all the way to the headlight trim rings (which would be black). All replacement outer grilles from GM or aftermarket companies have lines that stop well short of the headlight trim rings. Also, when seeing one already installed on a truck, if you see pop rivets, (you can see the silver pop rivets on both the red and green trucks in the above post), it's a replacement grille. Many of the old original outer grilles have had their black paint fade and you can see the black smooth faced rivets still in place (see photo below). Last edited by cericd; 10-25-2021 at 02:38 PM. |

Re: 1969 - 1970 Grill Insert & Shell - NOS
I might consider splitting them up. I would want $1250 for the out shell. I do not want to take a chance on shipping it and it getting damaged.

Re: 1969 - 1970 Grill Insert & Shell - NOS
Some relevant info on these grilles:
After doing some research, I have found these original Chevy 1969-70 GM part numbers, and when they were superseded with the final part numbers that lasted the entire run. 1969-70 Steel black painted headlight bezels: 3937473 LH changed to 3990705 in 8/1971 3937474 RH changed to 3990706 in 12/1971 1969-70 Outer grille shell: 3980036 changed to 3985054 in 6/1971 1969 Inner grille: 3980037 changed to 3985056 in 8/1971 The likelihood of coming across these NOS parts 50 years later is slim, but I just purchased the original steel headlight bezels, so they are out there. I would imagine that the 3980036 grille has the black painted strips that run the entire width of the center grille bar versus the 3985054 GM replacement and all of the reproductions. Its very easy to see which trucks still have their original grille shells.
