Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
I wonder how those wheels would look with year correct stainless hub caps?? I went that direction with my 68 even though it came with factory covers.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
Thanks sir.
I think the wheels would look better with some poverty caps or the year correct caps like you posted. Somewhat limited given they need to be 11.5" if I remember correctly. Something shiny to break it up some |

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
Well I got it running again. Runs smooth with new timing set. Transmission wouldn't turn the tires but it just needed some more oil so all good there.
Couple little issues. The water pump is seeping out of the back. I sacrificed some wrenches, ground them down to tighten the 6 bolts. It slowed it down but doesn't appear to have stopped. Ill double check again tomorrow but it will probably need a new back gasket. Man, I don't want to pull it all apart, chip bolt paint etc. So frustrating. Also when I had the rad re-cored I went with a three core. Not knowing there was a difference in shrouds. it doesn't fit like it did before. I used some small hose for spacers for the time being. I guess there were a lot of things done to not have any problems. |

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
Wheeled it outside to rinse off the year's worth of garage dust and drove it for its maiden test run. The only issue is a loose connection or ground for the voltage regulator.
There is still some work to do, bumper, headlights, antenna etc but it's winding down. Just in time for winter. The stance is just about right for me as I didn't want it too low. I'm considering Sniper Qjet fuel injection. They say to get it running first so I went that route vs putting it in as part of the project. |

Sacrilege
To make the truck more user friendly and to not load up on fuel on slow drives, I took the plunge and installed a Sniper Qjet and upgraded the 37 amp alternator to an internally regulated unit. Nothing was permanently altered (which for whatever reason I still find important).
I was able to tuck the fitech (50006 mini) up under the batter to keep it hidden. I used an angled fitting for the pressure gauge which has the side benefit of making the gauge readable looking between the batter and radiator support. |

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
Running the Sniper with the original points distributor left a lot of room for improvement. It was tough to get the fuel tables dialed in because of the inconsistency with the points.
I took the plunge and installed the Hyperspark. The improvement has been better than the difference between the carb and fuel injection. The drivability has made the Sniper and Hyperspark worth it. Caveat, I have been unable to join the Holley forums. I go through the registration process but I never get approved by a moderator. I am wondering if anyone else has had issues joining Holley's forum. My presence here indicates that I know how join a forum : ).

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
72 Cheyennes had them, or mine did. I am not bothering replacing mine as they are not really noticeable, and I am not going for a 100 percent correct restore.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
I looked for a couple of years for an NOS or great condition inner fender for the pass side. I ended up ordering a repo and now I am deciding to use the whole thing or go for a patch. The underside brackets are shaped somewhat differently so leaning towards a patch using the original reinforcement.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
I opted for the patch to keep as much original as I can. Lots of welding and grinding to go but the test fit showed I welded in the right spot.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
When hitting a bump at speed, the rear end would get a little squirrely, almost like rear steering.
I don't know how the should of the trailing arm bushings being cracked affects handling, but it can't hurt to replace the likely original bushings. I am also running the original shocks on the rear but I will replace those as well.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
Thank you. I put off fixing it as long as I could. Issue is, both sides are visible which can make it a challenge to have both sides looking like there is no patch. Undercoating will help.
While I had the trailing arms out for bushing replacement, I decided to clean them up and stitch weld before painting.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
I don't know how well this is going to work out but it is time to get in and repair the A pillar. I want to make sure I get everything lined up the way it is now so I built a removable jig to make sure the rocker ends up in the same place.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
Great idea, I have had a couple of rockers I fought with to get them to fit and that would have helped. I think most of my rocker problems were caused by the inner rocker/floor panels not being stamped correctly.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
I am hoping to avoid door fitment issues by creating several jig points so I made another for the rear of the inner rocker. Ill have more at the front which give me up and down along with in and out points of reference.
Certainly someone has done this before so Id be interested in how it worked out or if I am wasting my time and should just put the door on and off numerous times.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
I was never smart enough to do that! I'm a door on/door off repeated endlessly until it worked kinda guy! It's gotta be better than my process.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
That's a great idea. I used measurements off reference marks and it turned out ok, but I like your idea better.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
Im glad I made the jig stops. I began fitting the inner rocker and was able to tell it was about 3/16" to 1/4" too high at the step for the outer rocker. I might not have been able to notice otherwise. So, I made a pie cut to lower it at the rear. It fits fine at the front. Of course I now have more welding to do.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Super
Thank you.
I got the inner fitting well and about welded in with the B pillar tacked. I am disappointed on how the A pillar fit. Using the jig to locate the fender bolt hole and the cab support bolts to locate the patch, the line up was pretty bad. I got the face moved over and now I will slice the rear near the bolts and get all sides lined up.
