Clutch fan question
With it being so hot outside, I have noticed that my 71 burb has been running hot at stop lights. This has me suspecting the clutch fan. When I got home today, and the engine was hot, I got out, popped the hood, and tried to spin the fan. It spun fairly easily with just a little bit of drag. Now as I understand it, when the engine is warm, the clutch should not spin at all because it should lock up on the shaft and pull air thorugh the radiator. Do I have this right and it is time for a new clutch fan or maybe a fixed fan?

I took my clutch fan off when it spun freely and replaced it with a fixed fan that bolts right thru the upper pulley and spins all the time the pulley does

Sorry to steal the thread, but I've got a question.
I installed a Vintage A.C. system in the truck and the dealer (who also installs these systems) suggested that I get rid of my bolt on fan and go with a clutch fan. He said at stop lights the clutch fan pushes more air (because of blade pitch), but on the freeway freespins so it doesn't have that annoying howling sound. He said I coul get a diferent pitch bolt on blade, but on the highway it would be annoyingly load. Does anyone here have any good suggestions or input? Can anyone suggest what year and make to get a good clutch fan out of? Sorry to hijack, but you reminded me of what I need to do. Shawn

I have a stock cluch fan on my '73 and I have no problems in traffic or the open road. I live in the Los Angeles area and the freeways become parking lots some times.
