Would you feel comfortable shooting the whole truck in the Summit Hot Rod Black (if you liked that kind of look)? Orange peel or anything weird?

I think it would look ok. I don’t know if you could absolutely eliminate orange peel. Maybe reduce the final coat so it lays down real wet? Small parts you don’t really notice it but on something like a big flat door I think orange peel might be inevitable. The best plan might include wet sanding to 2000 grit to get it real flat, then going over the panels with 3M Trizact pads to 3000 or 5000 grit to bring back the semi gloss sheen. Just don’t know of any other way to get a whole truck perfect. But that’s just me. I’ve had real good luck with my Eastwood paint gun set but I’m still pretty green with paint. This is the only car I’ve ever painted so I’m sure a body shop veteran might have a different opinion.

Looks good.

Re: Yet another GMC build

2 coats Raptor bed liner with a fine foam roller, one coat Summit satin gloss urethane.

I tried to cover the dash in the Allsport viny. My vinyl dash experiment ended horribly. If I use this method i get the texture and a color matching my interior but no 5 hours of masking to respray the dash. I think I’m gonna go for it.

The factory dash had some speckle in it, so this wouldn't be far off. how does raptor liner black hold up in the sun? fade from black to gray, or stay true to color?

Re: Yet another GMC build

Painting with the roller was definitely easier. I kind of like the texture. It reminds me of the paint on old refrigerators. I would rather have sprayed it when it was masked the first time around, hard to make the finish even with a roller. I can guarantee I’ll be spraying the bed when I get there. In the mean time I can start assembling the dash.

Since I’m covering the raptor with semi gloss 2k I won’t truly know. It looked black before the paint but more black after. The problem is the sheen. Raptor was flatter by far, and I think that could make it look more gray. I know you can roll latex house paint in 3 sheens side by side and it will look like completely different colors. I’ll post a pic of raptor only for reference. I coated it so all my colors matched.

Re: Yet another GMC build

Built a channel to hide wiring, then mounted the Holley display screen on a swivel so it’s easier to read looking down from the driver seat.

Re: Yet another GMC build

Got the new carpet cut and fitted. I just need to bind the edges. And buy another yard. I didn’t have enough to cover the firewall or make floor mats.

Re: Yet another GMC build

Definitely. I sprayed lizard skin, glued down some thermal insulation, a layer of jute padding, then carpet. And I chose to make carpet that rolls over the step. I’ll take as much heat and sound barrier as I can get!

Re: Yet another GMC build

just a thought, a few snaps in the corners would keep things stuck down, like in the step wells where the carpets rolls over the edge and on the carpet corners. velcro works too.

Re: Yet another GMC build

Was planning a dollop of adhesive on each corner and using a big magnet to hold til it dries. I used Weldwood landau glue on the footwells and steps but the heat barrier doesn’t extend to the very corners. I thought the binding would pucker there but now it just curls some instead.

Painted the column. One more thing off the list.
