cleaning gas tank
who has the best way for cleaning gas tanks? i know they make a kit at the part stores for it, is that the best way to go?

Are you talking about the outside or inside. If you're talking inside, POR-15 makes a fuel tank sealer I've heard is very good. Their website has good info and how-to on the sealer.

If you want the INSIDE cleaned out....one recommendation-----REPLACEMENT.

I took the one from the Studebaker to the radiator shop and had them boil it out, or whatever they do, because the tank had no cap on it when I bought the car. Has been fine for 10K miles.

I took mine to a radiator shop here in town and they steam cleaned it. Most shops were wanting $50-$60 but this one quoted me $40 and only charged $35 because they said it was pretty darn clean and rust-free to begin with.
And it's for sale, btw. Cheap! If you want it I'll bring it to you next time I'm in San Antonio.

Have the radiator shop boil it out. Then use a sealer.
It will last for a long, long time that way. |

I used a product called "Kreme" to clean and coat the inside of my motorcycle tank. Worked great and it was pretty easy. Just flush the tank with plenty of water, then add their etching solution and let sit overnight. After letting it air out for a couple of hours, pour the Kreme in the tank and rotate it every so often. Even plugged up pinholes (which is inevitable after the etching process if your tank's interior is rusty), just like the instructions said.
