Brought home my 71 2day... Crate 350? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Here what I got:

71 LWB 350/250 factory AC, PB, and PS. Still has the factory AM radio. 'ol guy said a new engine was put in her around 10 years back, he beileves it was a crate but made no promises, how do i find out? I drove 4 1/2 hours running 80 to 85 just a smooth as can be, there's not one glitch of play in the steering and AC blew cold but think it could use a charge. Needs to be repainted, whoever he had do it the last time it was painted needs to get out of the auto painting business all together...

I excited - can't wait to get started totally redoing her

oh ya - I paid $3500. Good deal, bad deal? I would say it's about 96% rust free..

also the 250 tranny is a typo - it's a 350

you can run the numbers off the engine...one set of numbers on the passenger side on the bellhousing, right behind the head..and the other number is directly infront of the passenger side head on a small machined pad sticking out from under the head...you may have to remove the alt (if on that side) or the A/C compressor to read it. While looking in the back, you can look to the drivers side and look for 5.0 or 5.7 on the bellhousing, that will be a dead give away to it being a later engine.
Does that truckl still have the option sheet in the glove box? Is it a real Cheyene? I only ask becouse I can't make out the badge and the lower trim is MIA. It looks like a nice truck and 4 1/2 hrs at about 3000 - 3400 RPM is a pretty good test.

Sounds like a winner.

To the right down to the bottom...Z 84...Custom Sport Truck, That makes it a true Cheyene. (odd that the PO said it was not

You will probably find a bunch of holes on the lower portion of the body that have been filled in with filler. You indicated that the body man was not the best, so there is no reason to think he welded a billion holes shut. If you were to lay under the bed and look at the back side of the sheet metal, you should see how it was done. My guess is that it was in a minor accident and they were unable to locate the proper trim and just deleted it. I only say that becouse the grill looks pretty much new, and if the last owner cheaped out on paint, I doubt he handed over 5 bills for an outer grill.
Still looks pretty darn nice, and it is worth more than every heap I own combined.

Sorry I wasn't clear Longhorn - He said it was, I took his word that it was without really knowing. Guess that's pretty good news that it's truly a cheyenne huh? Cool information or your "longhorn" website - I see one of those trucks run around here, now I'll hafta finda out if it's a 50th longhorn..

Thanks for the kind words on the Longhorn site...The members on this board have confirmed 4 or 5 50th Longhorns...which is pretty cool and impressive when you look at the mid year introduction which made 68 the lowest production model year for the Longhorn.

I live in Rockledge, Fl. which is just south of Cocoa beach. I forgot to finish up my profile. Yup new to the board - I really like it, tons of information. I owned a 69 short/step about 15 years ago - I sure do miss that ol ragged out truck...

That is pretty impressive - if it turns out to be a longhorn - you want pictures of it? Of course that if I ever run across it again.
