How to lower my 72 gmc - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

i have a 72 gmc 3/4 ton and i want to lower it. it has 8 lug drums on it and leafs/coil springs in the back. i want about 4 inches lower in front and back. what is the best way to go for this? can you guys tell me what some of the things i can do/get to achieve this? like drop spindles/springs in front? or? and what about the back. also will the 8 lug drums cause a problem and will drums or disk brakes from another truck swap right on or what will i need to do about that? sorry about all the questions as im very new to these trucks. thanks for the help

a 4" drop is pretty easy to achieve with our trucks. it all depends on what you want to do with the truck. daily driver able to haul a load or the occasional cruise night & car show attempting to grab some attention. also depends on the budget & whether you want to stay with the 8 bolt pattern. a front suspension from any GM truck built between '67 & '87 will work.
also depends on you ability & willingness to engineer & "fabricate til you puke"
answer these questions so we can then give you a better idea of your options. you must also tell us where you hail from.

it would just be for cruising around, driving back and forth to school and around town. no hauling and anything like that. i would be willing to stick with the 8 lug for now, thats not a problem. i have built several engines before, rebuilt front ends on different cars/fabricated parts ect...so the work would not be a problem for me, i just dont really know what would be the best way for about a 4 inch drop all the way around. what do u guys think would be the best way for the front and back? thanks a lot

My project sounds much like what you want to do. I have a 68 gmc lwb 3/4 ton that I just finished installing a new 350/350 setup. For phase 2 I found a rolling 70 lwb 1/2 ton that has had all of the rear suspension and corresponding crossmembers removed and re-painted, including a 12 bolt 3.07 geared diff. In the next week or so that is all going to replace the heavier leafs and the dana 60 which should not only help the ride but get the rpm's down a bit. One of the main reasons I'm going this route is parts availablilty and cost. The pieces needed to get a cooler lower stance are much more affordable and available for the coil sprung versions vs a leaf setup...
