New fuel system startup
New gas tank, fuel lines, and mechanical pump. Is there a way to prime the fuel system to prevent excessive cranking or just prime the carb and go for it?

If you have the earlier truck without a evap system that uses a vented gas gap, you can use air pressure to push gas from the tank through the hoses, through the fuel pump and into the carb. Wrap a rag around your air nozzle and hold it into the tank filler neck. Give it a couple of quick shots of air and hold the rag tight.
Don't go crazy. You'll hear the tank "oil canning". Give it a couple of shots and check for accelerator shots in the carb. Another method. Most pre- smog carbs vent the fuel bowls into the neck of the carb. On a non-smog Edelbrock (without the side tube for the charcoal cannister) there are two squarish holes on top that you can pour fuel into the float chambers. Use a really small tipped funnel or an old hand oiler will work. A couple of tablespoons is all.

Ditto. This is all I ever do when staring one up that has been sitting a while.
I just pour whatever gas I have laying around down the carb. The engine coughing and spitting on that gas is usually enough to get things primed. And yes, this is WAY better than cranking on the starter.

Fuel into the vent shown by arrow. A full bowl will idle the engine for about a minute depending on cubic inches and other things .

I also have a boat, so I had this tool handy, but I used the vacuum pump/tank deal used for oil changes (it's like a pump sprayer in reverse basically) and used that to the fuel hose going to the fuel pump to first pump all the bad gas out, then hooked it up near the carb, etc.. to prime everything so I wasn't doing a bunch of dry cranking. I also dumped chainsaw gas in the carb so it would have a little bit of oil to it to lube stuff. Mine had been sitting for years though, not sure about yours.
