Door ajar chime

The door ajar chime on my 97 C1500 doesn't work. Anyone know where I should start looking to troubleshoot it?

There is no door ajar chime. There is a chime for headlights on and keys in ignition.

Yes. That is the chime that I'm talking about! Mine doesn't work. Where is the actual chime located?

It's a black box somewhere under the dash. I'm not entirely sure where its located exactly, I just know this because I hated the thing and when I said that to a friend he got in my truck and yanked it out.

It is on the realy block in the driver's foot well. Mounted on the firewall. black box with round holes in the side. Push the tab over and pull it out, that all there is to it.

Is it common for those things to go bad? I haven't looked at mine yet, but I'm assuming that it's either disconnected or just bad. Is there a way to test the unit on a bench (with some 12 volt leads)?

Id be happier that it didn't work. But if you must have it working just replace it, can't cost more than 20 bucks

Is that a dealer only item? Or something that AutoZone would stock?

I would say dealer only or salvage yard.
