Sorry, I know this sounds petty, but I HATE daytime running lights. In my opinion, the OPTION was always there for those who wish to run around in the day time with lights on...it's called a HEADLIGHT SWITCH.
Anyhow, I just bought a Suburban and am interested in killing the DRL's if there is an easy way to do it. Any info is greatly appreciated.

What year? if its a late 90s odl body style, jsut look under hte dash drive side, above accelerator pedal toward the knee panel, there is a little module there with fins on it, unplug it and your DRLs wont work, your headlights still will tho.

If its a 97 style theres a fuse in the box on the drivers side that says Fog lamps drl if you pull that the lights wont come on but the lil indicator light will still be on in the dash, but your headlights will work as normal. |

I believe some of these could be programmed to be normally off.....much like motorcycle headlights that have to be on all the time. Takes draw on the battery when starting.

The only ones that can be programmed are the NBS style trucks.
There is no draw from the lights when starting either, they are running off accesorie power and it is interrupted for start. The fuse will turn them off, but I don't see any good reason for it. IMO anything that might stop somebody from pulling out in front of me is a good thing.

Thanks for the help...I know it's a petty thing, but IMO if you can't see a vehicle coming in broad daylight, then you need to re-evaluate if you should be driving at all. Let alone a vehicle the size of a Suburban. I dislike any government imposed safety devices that are forced on people. Just look at the third brake lights- those were imposed back in '86 as a way for people to be able to "see" people braking several vehicles ahead. IMO just another example of the Governement imposing a law on an industry to help the few people who don't pay attention when they drive. I just don't get it....

I don't think DRL' s are required by law are they?
I do know we get a dicount on our insurance if we have them in this State anyway. And this is the State where we have the most Taxes and the stupidest laws in the land. Sorry just venting! |

Just press down on the parking brake one notch. The running lights go off. However, your brake light on the dash will be lit.

I agree, but that doesn't change the fact that 90% of people on the road have their head up their butt. Another thing I like about them is that there are tons of people who don't turn their lights on until they absolutley can't see. Or not at all in rain or fog. At least there are a couple of lights on their vehicle when you meet them with DRLs. The DRLs are not regulated by law, some makes don't run them. Besides I think they look

OK- then we will just have to agree to disagree I don't think DRL's look cool at all. But I am also one of the few people who actually turn on the running lights when it gets dusk too. This practice alone used to drive my Dad crazy when I first started driving. Maybe my preference has something to do with the fact that my first car had hidden headlights....( 69 Dodge Charger )...something about seeing that car with the running lights on, and the headlight doors closed. I always thought THAT looked cool... But hey, what do I know from

I'm actually putting ON DRL on my 85. I think they are a good idea just like the 3rd high mount brake light.

Don't even get me started on the 3rd brake lights....
Thats cool if you want that stuff...That is what makes each of us different. My position has always been if you want to run with lights on, the choice has ALWAYS been there...just turn on your headlights!! I just don't want someone telling me I have to run with them.

Well I dont like the drll's for this reason, lose your alternator 40 miles from home adn try driving with those headlights on the whole way, Im guessin you wont make it, for the hell of it right near home I turned the headlights on for a second and the gauged dropped, if I want drls I know how to turn the headlights on, while on this subject how many newer chevrolets and gmcs have you seen with one burned out, whats with that?

Your truck wouldn't run long on just the battery anyway. Without the altenator charging a modern vehicle won't make it more than a few miles. Too many things in the engine itself pulling power.

I made it about 40 or so miles but if I turned the radio or anything on the gauge would dip a lil more, I guess I shouldnt say the alternator totally went just charged enough to keep it alive, but Im glad I pulled that fuse on the drls, just dont care for them.
