Reproduction EDP primer panels
Most listed panels state EDP Weld through primer.
This is also the case with bolt ons such as hoods and fenders. Besides skuffing them and wiping/tack cloth do they actually need a primer coat ? |

Re: Reproduction EDP primer panels
Absolutely.
The coating on most of the panels I have used is pretty thin and of unknown quality, NOT like what you would get on a modern OEM panel. I would actually recommend removing as much of it as reasonably possible and starting from bare metal. |

Re: Reproduction EDP primer panels
I help at a body shop a couple days a week. On the aftermarket panels we scuff them with a red 3M scuff pad and yes they need a good 2K primer prior to any body work.

Re: Reproduction EDP primer panels
I live in wimpy CA with wimpy weather, and I have left EDP coated patch panels outside in the elements for 3-7 years and the paint got a hazey or dull, but it didn't simply flake off and completely rust.
I'm not suggested to forgo basic prep, but it doesn't seem totally worthless. |

Re: Reproduction EDP primer panels
Ok guys thanks. I will do the primer regardless.
Better be safe and have a better outcome. I thought there was a chance of skipping the step But going the lazy route would have bothered me with the chance of a poor job |

1 last thing
I have heard of doing epoxy primer as a 1st coat Then urethane for a 2nd coat being it will not clog up the during the sanding process |

Re: Reproduction EDP primer panels
If you scuff the EDP with like 220 grit then do a couple coats of high build primer that is what I do on al the parts I change for newer cars and trucks. Now on aftermarket some parts the primer is not near as good and the OE of course take a little thinner on a rag and wipe it on the primer to see if it comes off on to the rag, if it does sand that crud off then do a 2 coats of epoxy then your high build.
