I6 250 Water Pump Replacement

Began process of replacing the water pump on my 67 today. Curious as to what needs to be done to pull the fan to get to the pump.

Picture was from beforehand. I have the belt and hoses off, just not sure how to get the fan assembly off.

Beginner mechanic so use small words

Loosen the Fan Belt at the Alternator.
Take all hoses off the Water Pump. Heater Core In/Out, Radiator, Thermostat Housing* --Etc.

Loosen the 4 bolts holding the fan to the Water Pump.
There may be an extension neck between the Water Pump and Fan.
[A Fan Clutch would be unusual on an L6.]
If the Radiator is too close, you may have to pull it too. Usually not. But try not to scrape the rear of the Radiator fins with tools.

*[I know the 292 well, but never had a 250. There may be fewer hoses on the 250 than the bigger L6.]

Few L6s had a Fan Shroud... Unless Factory A/C.

Four bolts hold the WP on to the front of the block. After they are pulled, the pump may still stick on due to the RTV. Give the part a tap with a ball pein hammer, but not too hard. A lot of antifreeze may splash out at this point. Let it drain, then scrape old adhesive off with a scraper or razor blade. One of the bolts may also be the pivot for the Alternator brace. Note its position and if it's a different length.

Save all parts. Tag and bag if needed. Shoot pix of stages. Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly. Refill coolant.

Great! Thanks. I was thinking the bolts on the front of the fan needed to come off but wasn’t positive. It is fairly close to the radiator. No shroud to work around though.

Appreciate the help.

You may need to remove the radiator to get the bolts all the way out, but probably not.

One of those spots where a Speedwrench or closed end of a Gearwrench gets on the fastener head without the bulk of a Socket on a Ratchet.
