Re: Custom Camper, Camper Special and The Longhorn
One could buy a 133" wheelbase 3/4T GMC, but they never used the "Longhorn" designation.

Re: Custom Camper, Camper Special and The Longhorn
1967 gmc were camper cruisers and had a special badge. After 68 I'm not sure.

Re: Custom Camper, Camper Special and The Longhorn
The Sierra Grande was a trim package. It could be had on any bed length truck. The 133” trucks were available in fleet side “Longhorn” or step side configuration as well as cab and chassis with no bed at all.

Re: Custom Camper, Camper Special and The Longhorn
What badging did GMC put on their 8'.6" bed 1969-72 pickup trucks. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the "Longhorn" badge.

Re: Custom Camper, Camper Special and The Longhorn
GMC didn't put any badging on their 133" wheelbase trucks with fleetside beds (i.e. with 8' 6" bed). It was just a 133" wheelbase truck.
Longhorn script on the bed was for Chevs only. 133" wheelbase was unrelated to the separate RPO Z81 Custom Camper option, but Z81 could be ordered on a 133" wheelbase truck (and often was). "Custom Camper" was the RPO Z81 option that resulted in the Custom Camper script above the door handle from 68-72 for GMC. As has been noted above, in 67 it was the Camper Cruiser, a pretty rare truck. Camper Special was not an option until 73 (even though different terminology exists across some of the SPIDs in this era - the actual Z81 RPO was "Custom Camper") |

Pics of a pretty original 1970 GMC 133 WB and no Longhorn badging anywhere.

Re: Custom Camper, Camper Special and The Longhorn
Beautiful truck Greg. Note that is the GMC Custom script only (which GMC used in regard to trim level) - that's a different animal. So, it's not a Custom Camper (no Z81 on the SPID). (Same scenario as the blue one Greg posted (another beauty) - Custom script related to trim level with no Z81 on the SPID).

Re: Custom Camper, Camper Special and The Longhorn
Damn! those Trucks are BEAUTIFUL!
So, If someone tells you they have a "Longhorn" pickup, that means they have 133" box Chevy? Aaand, if someone tells you they have a Custom Camper, Custom Cruiser or Sierra Grande it doesn't necessarily mean their box is 133"? The reason I got into all this, a big shot that's always right (in his mind) told me a GMC we saw with that added box piece was a Longhorn and even I knew Longhorn is a Chevy term...I just changed the subject because I knew if I would have kept talking trucks he probably would have told me he owned a C/10 GMC when he was in high school.... |

Re: Custom Camper, Camper Special and The Longhorn
My 1971 Super Custom, 133" wb GMC has Camper Wiring on the SPID but no Custom Camper on the door. I think you were allowed to order the script after you ordered the required camper related options. The script was actually a stand alone option, not part of any option group.

So, one could have two 100% identically equipped trucks, capable of the exact same hauling capacity - and one could be a Custom Camper (with Z81 on the SPID) and one could be a non-Custom Camper (with no Z81 on the SPID). And neither, both, or either could have camper wiring. For Chevs with Z81 RPO - the emblem appeared on the fender thru 71 (in place of the trim emblem - so, yes, you could have a 71 Cheyenne Super and nobody would know it because it had the Custom Camper emblem on the fender - Z81 supersedes YE9 badging when they conflict); and above the door handle in 72 only. For GMC with Z81 RPO, the Camper Cruiser emblem was used in 67 (front portion of fender), then the door Custom Camper script was used 68-72 (I think... some GMC guru probably needs to double check me on that ) In order below: 65 Chev Custom Camper (rare as hen's teeth, and still lookin for one ..) 66-68 Chev Custom Camper 67 GMC Camper Cruiser 69-71 Chev Custom Camper (this one happens to also be a Cheyenne Super) 68-72 GMC and 72 Chev Custom Camper |

I don't remember which thread I found that page about Custom Campers and the requirements. I'd sure like to have that whole book, TBH.

I saw part of another document (or maybe the Custom Camper stuff came from that document?) that detailed what each option was comprised of. Like heavy duty cooling, which came with AC or as a standalone option if not ordering AC. It talks about having a bigger fan for that option.

Re: Custom Camper, Camper Special and The Longhorn
In hindsight, the '67-'72 Custom Camper option left a lot to be desired. Besides the heavy duty springs, shocks, stabilizer bar, it was up to the buyer or truck salesman to order all the other goodies to make the vehicle more complete recreational vehicle. The '65-'66 Custom Camper option included much more comfort, convenience and appearance items as part of the package. In other works, the '67-'72 C.C. was just a shell of the '65-'66 C.C. option.
