700r4 to 4L60 E swap

My 700r4 is having some problems and I am thinking about swapping it to a 4l60e. Would there be any advantage to this? How hard would the conversion be? I wouldnt think it would be a direct replacement, but i have been wrong before ( just ask my kids mom). I have heard that the 4l60 was a better tranny although I cant really complain with the service my 700r4 has given me.

I would stick with the 700r4 aka 4L60 (4L60 is the technical designation of the 89+ ones, 4L60E is the designation for the electronically controlled valve body version) you have now. You can upgade but it would require new wiring/PCM and not sure what else.

Trans swap

What is the truck priarily used for? How long did the 700 last??? What is it the complaint on the 700 now?? I build 700's all the time for people and if it has some updates put in it at the time of rebuild they are pretty dependable!! The thing that kills most 700's is either towing in od and/or not changing fluid and filter often enough!!

The truck is for all intents and purposes a work truck. It regularly hauls 2 to 3,000 pounds. My biggest complaint right now is the pump is dying. It is singing a death song. It still seems to operate well for a tranny with 200K+ on it. I have kept up the maintainence on it. I had heard that the 4l60 was a better trans but after Josh's post I think I will just have mine rebuilt with all the heavy duty goodies in it and keep running it.

rebuild it, with a 13 vane pump kit, HD sun shell, good clutches and band, new thrust washers, and a towing shift correction kit, and you should be good to go. the only catastrophic 700r4 failure i ever had was the input shaft splines stripped off, but it had unknown mileage and was one of the weaker early units from 83.
