Final priming completed At this point, I believe that I have the body work on the truck about 98% complete. After applying a full 3 coats of Eastwood Urethane 2K Primer Surfacer on all components of the body, I am now to the final sanding stages before I can apply paint. This past weekend I fixed a flat spot that I found on the bed, and finished up the hood, cowl, and tailgate and then put everything on the frame to fully cure for the next 2 weeks or so. My plan at that point will be to work from the front to the back doing final sanding, fixing any blemishes that I missed and then paint. As far as paint goes, I have decided to go with TCP Global’s Restoration line of Acrylic Urethane. For the body, I will be going with “Grabber Blue” and will paint the cab “Championship White”. It is rewarding to finally see things coming together. I did get a bit of overspray on the panels during the priming, so after it was dry, I went over everything with a red scuff pad to knock it down and remove any nibs that were in it. It all gets sanded anyway, but that is the swirling that you see in the primer.

Looking good!
Not sure how the TCP global compares to the PPG Omni AU, but it should be fairly easy to lay down flat, and you can sand out imperfections and buff easily. |

Paint day….at last!!! After months of work, I have finally gotten the chance to shoot some color on the truck! I decided to go with the TCP Global’s Restoration Shop line of paint in a single stage urethane. This was decided based upon talking with Scott (loudchevy) and seeing how good it laid down on his ‘70 C10. I went with “Grabber Blue” for the body and will be spraying “Championship White” on the cab and upper doors. Also at Scott’s recommendation, I went with the XR-85 slow reducer to help the paint lay out nicer in the open crematorium that I live in (Phoenix). That was definitely a good call, because if you are not careful out here in the summer, then paint can turn to dust as it leaves the gun! That brings up a point…..Painting is an art form for sure! From the surface preparation, to the painting itself and to the cleanup, this was all a lot harder than I thought it would be. And for sure, my paint job is definitely amateur. There are some runs, orange peel, and even some dry spots along with some bugs and dirt nibs in the finish that I will have to cut and buff out, but for the most part I am happy with the results. I can say that I did it myself and it won’t be that bad looking from 5 feet away. I also learned something about laying down a single stage….and that is to follow the TDS! The TDS calls for 2-3 medium wet coats with 15 minutes of flash time in between coats. When I sprayed the hood and the fenders (first things I did) I followed that to the “T” but then at the last minute thought I could spray a “drop coat” as a 3rd coat to make it all even. Well, that was a big mistake…..either that or I just did it wrong. It ended up putting a thinner drier coat on top of what was going to be a fairly nice lay out and left me with quite a bit of orange peel. It is not the end of the world as I can wet sand and buff it….worse case is I sand it and reshoot it. But lessons were learned for sure. Next items up are the wheel wells, core support, and the underside of the bed and bed floor supports. Those are all going to get raptor lined or painted Rustoleum satin black. From there, my plan is to tackle the bed and tailgate next and then finish with the cab.

Clay, I love that blue! I need to swing by and check it soon. The 2 tone white and blue are going to be killer. Glad you're getting some panels in color, it's pretty rewarding to get there after all the hours of labor spent to that point. Congrats!

Hi Clay,
Been checking up on your progress. Very exciting how close you’re getting. Blue and white two tone is my favorite color combination. Ironically, my truck was originally that color, but the original owner repainted it green and white. Oh well, maybe I’ll correct that one of these days. Was reviewing your posts about transfer case rehab. Was wondering how your rebuilt case tolerances compares to your NOS time capsule. You mentioned no gear to shaft slop on the counter shaft of the NOS case.. Are you referring to rotational or side to side movement? How about movement in the input shaft? Do you have any additional photos of your transfer rebuild? Was going to farm out my needed repairs, but looking like I’ll need to do it myself, so gathering all the info I can. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait to see the finished product. And of course, thanks for sharing all you are learning with the rest of us. Tom

Oh, and one other question while I’m bugging you. How did you hold the input and output flanges when torquing the retaining nuts? Looks like someone used a pipe wrench on at least one of mine (ouch!). I’m hoping for a more elegant solution.

Cab Painting, Wheel Painting, and Steering Column Rebuild After tossing things around in my head, I have made the decision to have someone do the final sanding and paint on the cab and bed. First off, as I have mentioned in the past, paint and body work is an art. While I was able to get 95% of the way there on my own I really wanted the end result to be a bit better than I knew I was capable of so I found a paint and body guy who was willing to finish up my remaining body work and shoot paint. He made the cab look new again! He is still working on the bed, but the cab turned out better than I could have hoped for. We also opted to use spray in bedliner on the floor of the cab to offer a bit more protection and insulation. It will ultimately get either kilmat or dynamat underneath, but I figured that the extra bit of protection would be worth it. I also was able to finally get the wheels sandblasted and painted. For those, I ended up just going with rustoleum paint mixed with some acetone and some Majik enamel hardener. I figured that it was worth it to see how they come out. Worse case scenario is that I have to re-blast them and have them powder coated, but for now I figured that this was a cost effective measure. I was also able to rebuild the steering column. This was a lot easier than I thought. I disassembled and cleaned everything, stripped everything down to bare metal, and then painted it with rattle can rustoleum. I also replaced all the wiring components in the column. I am still on the fence with the steering wheel. I am not sure if I will attempt to restore this one or just get a reproduction. The new reproduction ones are reasonably priced so that may be the better route.
