Re: '59 4x4 Build

I've made some progress since my last post. I didn't realize it's been over 3 months. Most of the stuff I've been doing is the tedious work that doesn't have anything to do with looks, but a lot to do with function. Hooking up fuel and brake lines, running wiring, getting a lot of details together to make it work. I added gussets to the trans cross member for lateral stiffness. Did I mention I hate wiring? Yeah, I thought so.

I still have the front fenders and hood off for easy access to the brake MC, engine harness, steering, etc. The truck looks ten times better with the wheels and tires on though!

Re: '59 4x4 Build

Recently took the transfer case out to put a Mile Marker part time kit in it. Locking hubs were already installed, so it made sense to complete the part time conversion.
Had a strange noise from the bell housing when I got the engine started and it took me a while to figure out it just needed spacers between the flex plate and torque converter.
Bled the brakes and finished the wiring except to the front fenders. Installed the radio and antenna. Made some speaker panels to go behind the seat corners, which also hide the shoulder belt retractors.
With the engine running, it's time to get the front sheet metal put together.
Will post pics soon of the progress.

Getting Close to Completion

With the brakes, transmission and front end wiring sorted out, I began assembling the front end sheet metal. Needs some adjustment to get the gaps right and everything working together, but the front fenders and hood are on! It's starting to look like a real truck.

Re: '59 4x4 Build

here is a video showing how a guy with a task force gets the gaps to align properly. not saying you need it, just saying it has some good tips.

Re: '59 4x4 Rolling Out!

My first foray out of the tent, onto the lawn for pics. Seems like Labor Day was an appropriate day to be finished. Still needs carpet, AC, radio hookup and a few other small items, but essentially DONE!

Re: '59 4x4 Build

I took the truck out for a drive across town and found the steering was wandering and hard to keep straight. I went to a shop where some friends work on their project cars on weekends. That's where I discovered the shackles on the front springs were at the wrong end, making the caster negative. (Done by the previous owner) I swapped the springs around to put the shackles at the rear and it steers much better. I also found a loose ball joint and tie rod end, so replaced them.

I've been busy with other projects, but will get to finishing the interior soon.
