Neutral Safety Switch Issue

Got a restored tilt column from Gary Terry for my 72 C10 and every so often after shifting through the gears the switch disengages. I’ve had the switch off if couple of times and the only thing I can kinda see is that the tang in the column is sort of up to one side of the opening. I am always able to get the switch to engage and work for a time then it will eventually disengage and I have to reset it. I’m going to call Gary and see if he has any ideas and I’m also going to swap to another switch I have from the non-tilt column I took out. Anyone had this issue?

If the notch that the metal tab fits into on the NSS has a chip out of the plastic on either side that will cause it to do that. Also make sure that neither of the mounting tabs that the screws go through are bent down. If they are, that will hold the switch up away from the metal tab on the shift tube.

Just some thoughts....

Re: Neutral Safety Switch Issue

Attach an Ohm meter to the NSS tabs, with the shifter/indicator in the neutral position slide the switch slowly back and forth to find what you perceive to be the exact center. Lock it down and you are good to go.

It works when it’s engaged, when this happened it won’t crank anywhere. Somehow it’s coming disengaged from the tab.
