Re: 72 C10 Build

Thanks Roger, very, very carefully! Ha, I'm just messing with yah. I always do it this same way here’s a link, easy peasy.

Next up, I called for some help! We took our cab to Hot Rod Body & Paint, my friend Tony. I asked him to help out with the parts that show, cab corners, outer rockers, door skin & door fitment. With my boy and I being noobs at metal repair this was in my book the way to the best result.

Side note: This was one of the first and few times dragging the car trailer with our STS Turbocharged Trailblazer. One of those distractions I was talking about in my last post. We traded off our cool old tow pig for the TBSS and had to use it here and there for truck stuff.

Next, he got the door skinned and started outer rocker fitment.

Re: 72 C10 Build

This truck will have a Cheyenne tailgate band since I intend to convert it into a Super. We spent a few minutes filling the original bottom molding holes. As this particular molding isn't necessary for the style I want. We'll deal with the trailer tongue dent later.

You can see that we are insulating (and sheetrocking) the garage in the background. Good times. I've been freezing trying to work in the winter and am eager to finish my workspace.

Re: 72 C10 Build

About this time in the build, I was looking at trucks on eBay and ran across Old Blue. Yep, I bid immediately on this Idahoan farm-fresh flatbed. It didn’t matter that I already had the Camaro, C10, and our future K30 Build (an RV, that was a 4x4 wanna-be) torn apart and no room to move. I just needed this truck! The plan was to load the TBSS on the trailer when we got there, Blue had a different plan. The fuel pump went south on our test drive, so only 350 miles trailering it like that. The retired truck driver in me knows better (Sketchy!), but it worked. Back home safe and sound, and gassing up at our local Costco.

Re: 72 C10 Build

Nice, I always wanted a dually.

I've been wondering how you can keep updating 2 build threads, now you will have to find time for 3! I can barely keep one thread going!

Re: 72 C10 Build

Ha, I hear ya! It does take a minute.

The Old Blue 72 was one of four dually trucks I’ve owned, and my third consecutive 72. It didn’t need much, so no build thread is coming on that one. It does show up in the 72 K30, 67 Camaro, and now this build thread. As it happens, I picked up both of my 72 C30s while the first phase of this build was underway.

To answer your question, I’m a retired fart for one, and I take a lot of pics while I’m building these days. The timeline on these builds will also explain how. The Camaro Build is done as of last fall, I just got behind on the thread. I’m still documenting it for myself and those following along, it’ll wrap up in a few more months. I’m just enjoying photo shoots and taking the car to car shows now.

The C10 is my oldest unfinished project (ever), I joined the forum when I purchased it. The poor truck has always been on the back burner. After finishing the Camaro I returned to it full-time (at least for me ). Since it's currently in body shop jail getting color, I picked up an old El Camino to play with until it returns. We might see a build thread on that one, it needs a bit of luv but I'm committed to leaving it crusty!

Tony has the right cab corner on and working the outer rocker to make it mate up. I think a light skim coat on the door shell will make it presentable. This right side is what it is.

Re: 72 C10 Build

I retired about 5 years ago, built my shop, got all my wife's never-ending list done, and started on my truck.

I also have projects I have had for 20 years, I couldn't afford to buy them now!

Good luck, Rg

Good for you Roger! Just living the dream, I always wanted to retire to the garage!

This is as good as it got at Hot Rod Body & Paint. Tony did a good job with what we gave him. It looks pretty good, but it may not be right enough for lower moldings.

Re: 72 C10 Build

Five more months had passed at Hot Rod Body before we brought the cab back home. That puts us at two and a half years, give or take a month.

Re: 72 C10 Build

Maybe now’s a good time to mention my original vision for the truck (2011-2023). Fellow forum member JWall had a beautiful 72 C10. I thought I’d do some things differently so not an exact copy but damn, I like that truck! Here’s a link to his thread and a few pics I borrowed.

Re: 72 C10 Build

Now you know the vision. Prior to the floor pans going in, I was lucky enough to acquire this nice red bucket seat console combination from another forum member. Here’s the stuff, along with a high hump (another forum score), just sitting in the cab right after they arrived. I took the opportunity to break out a Sharpie and mark all the mounting locations.

Re: 72 C10 Build

Thanks Roger, I was excited to get them. Mrs. 7dee2 doesn’t care for the OE scroll type covers so I thought these aftermarket non scroll covers would be perfect. The seats themselves seem to be in excellent condition, the console needs to be restored but is mostly all there.

I took the console apart to prep for stripping and to see what parts if any are needed. Same with the seat mounting brackets, I wanted to make sure that we have everything needed.

Re: 72 C10 Build

I'm continuing the finish work from Hot Rod Body, and yes, I did remove the sticker. Some spots are proving difficult to finish the welds due to the contour and space limitations. Sorry for the poor-quality pics, I was still using my old shop camera for these shots.

Re: 72 C10 Build

These seat belts showed up on eBay about the same time I acquired the seats (pics are from the listing). I’ll admit I did have to pay a premium (at that time) to have the guy sell to me and end the auction early. They’ve been sitting in the shipping box ever since.

Re: 72 C10 Build

There are plenty more plug welds to do. The background shows that we’ve finished the garage interior, and here’s a skyshot from the loft space that we added.

Also, I picked up another cab (this green one makes four) just in case it’s needed to fix or replace the RV cab used for the K30 build. Ha, you know C10 distractions.

Re: 72 C10 Build

With the floor pans in we verified the final placement of the seats and console again. I've been figuring out the process on this cab for both our bucket seat conversions, as I was gearing up to do another for the 72 K30 Build.

Re: 72 C10 Build

In addition to the floor mount kit we sourced square nuts for the console and high hump floor mounting. Tacking each side secures the mounting nuts and finishes up this part of the installation.

FYI: Here's a link from where I sourced this first set of Roger Koop's bucket seat conversion floor mounts. https://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vbo...d.php?t=540136

Hey, that’s a lot of plug welds. If we didn’t have enough in the first place, I decided to put an extra one in between for double the spots.
