Rear Blazer hatch handle key lock question?

Was talking to a knowledgeable 67-72 vendor about an original / NOS or if a reproduction 69-72 Blazer rear hatch T handle was out. There is everyone offering the replacement oh garage door handles that look replacement quality correct but I'm wanting it using one original square GM key coded for the ignition-doors-hatch as the original Blazer did. Does any of these "garage door" handles able to use the same GM key blank and/ or lock cylinder that can be recoded or is this just an oem GM lock control handle feature?

Lightbulb Re: Rear Blazer hatch handle key lock question?

A quality repro hatch T handle is sorely needed. None of the current replacements can accept a GM lock cylinder. An original, whether NOS or rechromed used, are the only good options at the moment. The lock cylinders that fit these are scarce. These were one key to fit all locks, so for example if you own a 1970 Blazer, then you will need a "J" lock so that it can be keyed to your existing locks. 1971 used "A" locks, 1972 used "C" locks.

I've never checked any of the universal "T" handles to see if the GM keys would fit them.

As far as the reproduction handles, the problem is that the lock cylinder would also have to be reproduced. It could be done and the different keyways that 1970cstblazer mentioned could be overcome by making the lock cylinder with a universal keyway, that way all of the key profiles would fit it. Some of the Strattec (OEM) and aftermarket door locks and glove box locks are made that way. Any '67-'72 key will fit them.

Re: Rear Blazer hatch handle key lock question?

Sorry mod and thanks for moving as I posted in the wrong header.
Very good information, and thank you all for your responses. I have a member here that has a used handle being replated and he has a new GM version keyed lock ready to go back in. Just waiting for him to get it back from the plater. I struggled with the need for a GM key for this hatch as I will probably never leave this truck where it is left outside unattended or locked. lol
LockDoc ,I'll be in touch to see how we can build a new/used full set rekeyed to the new handle key or not.

Will do Leon. I've been waiting on a board member here who has a rechromed OEM handle that he said already has a new complete one GM square key lockset that you did for him. But he is still waiting on the rechromer getting it done and back to him. Thanks, Mark

I talked with Mark over at Motor City K5 at the beginning of the year and he is planning on bringing an reproduction rear hatch handle to market soon. He also said that he will be offering full set of locks all keyed alike (ignition, doors, glove box and rear hatch handle).

That would be a good deal if he can pull it off. The matching hatch handle lock cylinder is going to be the tough part....
