This morning I got the parts down from hanging and set them flat on stands. I then mixed up some urethane primer surfacer and sprayed a couple coats on the top sides. This will give me something to block sand and then do my filler work on top of.

Here is a couple with the primer wet...

And after flashing off I put them through a bake cycle so we could get them out of the booth.

Thanks guys! It has been nice to be getting some real forward motion with this project.

I was off work yesterday due to a funeral for a family member. Back to school today and back on the truck with my sophomore kids. First thing this morning we did one last final sand of all of the bare metal. Then did a two-step metal prep treatment again using PPG's SX579 and SX520. I was so wrapped up in doing this, I neglected to take pics.

Once in the booth and fully dry I sprayed two coats of PPG's DelFleet F4921BK epoxy. For those who don't know about this epoxy, this stuff is what DP wishes it was. Better coverage, no induction times, and it sands nicely if needed!!

Re: Long Time Coming......

I started off this morning my masking the areas in the cab where I don't need any high level primer surfacer.

IMG_1705 by Glenn Sinon, on Flickr
IMG_1706 by Glenn Sinon, on Flickr
IMG_1707 by Glenn Sinon, on Flickr

Then I sprayed two coats of a PPG high build primer surfacer.

Oh, and yes I now see a lot of dents that did not get fixed yet. In bare metal these were far less obvious than they are now. Once home and I now that I can see them, I will do some hammer/dolly work.

After a bake cycle to cure the primer I rolled the cab back into the prep bay. I then hung the drivers door and unmasked all of the interior.

I have now finished what I still needed to do on the passenger door. Tomorrow morning it will get the metal prep treatment and then epoxy. Friday I will spray the surfacer on it.

Re: Long Time Coming......

Friday morning I took the door down and layed it flat, then sprayed primer surfacer on both the door and cowl vent. After a bake cycle I hung the door.

Monday or Tuesday, I plan to bring my truck/trailer to school to bring it all home for summer vacation and. start slinging body filler.

Re: Long Time Coming......

Back home now in my shop and on the lift, ready for body work to begin this weekend.

I also spent an hour or so getting some things cleaned up and got my body filler table all set for things to come.

Re: Long Time Coming......

Well.... the body filler stage has begun. Its been pretty hot here in Connecticut, and boy am I thankful to have air conditioning in my shop. Otherwise this would have been unbearable he last couple weeks.

The firewall is done, as is the roof and around the rear windows. So is the reveal that sits just below the rear windows. Next up is the back wall of the cab. There are quite a few dents in this area, and even though I metalworked as many as I could, I can envision having to cover the entire area with filler and then block it straight.

I had to do this to the roof area, and as you can see, it isn't very thick, in some areas it is downright see-through.

I 100% agree. I do have a really nice Festool vac system, but because this truck is such a bubble its hard to block with a flat long board on the vac. All of my flexible blocks are for hand use only.

Thanks, I appreciate that.

Working on the rear of the cab and the passenger door blend from the cab, to the door, to the cowl.

That dab of body filler is there on purpose. Even though the door is latched, when block sanding it will move a little in and out. That dab of cured filler in the gap will hold the door steady so when sanding across it gap the door will hold steady.

Still more sanding to go, so a fair amount of this filler will disappear prior to primer.

Re: Long Time Coming......

I've had a few of my customers' cars in the World of Wheels show circuit over the years. All of them had 99% filler surface coverage. It's the only real guarantee for total straightness. There is no shame in having filler covering most of a panel.

It's a funny topic. I was at a 4th of July party past week and some friends asked me about this. One specifically wanted to know when it became the norm to cover a hot rod from head to tow with filler, because back "in the day" if you did that you would be ridiculed as a hack.

My answer to that was when the Boyd Coddington TV show American Hot Rod was on and it showed Charley Hutton do it and explain why. At that point, to me, people got over it and understood the need.

In my career and travelly the country for PPG I have met some great builders, and am fortunate to now call Charley a friend, he has taught me a lot.

Glenn

Re: Long Time Coming......

Small world... I worked with Jim McGill back in the day when PPG was still Ditzler. I did field research and product testing to create the DBU line of basecoat, specifically converting DAU colors into workable DBU formulas. Our work was a direct result in developing more colors than the grayish green DP40. Our results showed too little hiding. Soon to follow were DP48, DP90, DP74.ect... Good times... but, back when DP still had chromate in it and actually worked...

Re: Long Time Coming......

Well I guess its been a minute since I last updated this thread. There isn't much to show when all you are doing is sanding body filler again and again.

The cab and doors are now done and ready for four coats of Evercoat polyester primer. I have everything sanded and have masked the cab where I don't want or need the poly.

Next weekend is the Adirondack Nationals car show that I'm taking my 55 Belair to, once home Sunday I will load the cab into my enclosed trailer and bring it to the booth Monday for the poly application. So my next post, one week from today should show that.

Looking really good. As somebody that works in a restoration shop I know the immense amount of work it takes to make these look good when they're shiny. Which is why mine is keeping the original patina lol. It's a long slow process but it's worth it in the end.

It certainly is quite a long process. As of right now, I am at 750 hours working on this project.

Re: Long Time Coming......

Today was primer day!!

Yesterday after getting home from the weekend long car show I was able to get the cab and doors loaded up. This morning I towed to school and got them all unloaded and into the booth.

I had ordered a gallon of Evercoat Optex poly primer that mixes 4:1. With five quotes sprayable I was hoping to get at least 3, if not 4 full coats. I guess I underestimated the square foot coverage of this. I got 3 coats on the cab, but only 2 on the doors. Hopefully its enough. If not then back to the booth for more.

Re: Long Time Coming......

In case you don't know anything about this product, it is a hybrid epoxy/polyester primer. Super high build, we joke that it will cover small sheep and children! Lol. Also, the pink color is a built in guide coat. Dries pinkish, but once sanded through it is grey underneath.
After you start blocking, any pink showing is a low spot.

Less pink after a full bake, but still pink-ish.

Now home.....

And lastly, I hit this with some sand paper just to show how the guide coat looks once the top layer is sanded through.
