Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Just about got the driver side wrapped up. The corner is done and need to do some finish welding and grinding on the rocker patch. I think I am going to end up cutting a patch for where the dent is in the side of the cab. It is hard to get a hammer in there to reshape the metal. And, because I am a novice, the cramped space is making it even hard. I have plenty of cab corner left from my patch panel so I think that is what I am going to do.
After I do some maintenance things in the shop, media blasting the inside of the cab is next. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bIBcDZgt2w |

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
I finished building my air dryer needed to do some painting. As I was using some of my air tools, I was getting way to much moisture out of them. So, I knew I had to do something before painting. With suggestions from here, I built this out of an old dorm fridge. Hopefully this will fix the problem. Need to do some fine tuning and finishing, but I don't think I have any leaks. Next is having the inside, firewall, and bottom media blasted and epoxy painted. Hopefully that will happen this week.

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
I started taping the cab for media blasting. I am having the bottom, firewall, and inside blasted. I needed to tape off around the windows and doors to try and protect my original red paint. Again at this time, I am not looking to paint the entire truck. But, I need to fix the floor in spots and would like the interior painted while doing all the work. The blaster should be here this week and after that, laying down some epoxy to seal everything up.

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Got some epoxy down on my firewall, bottom and inside of cab. Need a few touch ups, but once that is done, it is on to more rust repair.

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Thanks Harold. I did my final coats yesterday on the dash. Got a run or two and some trash but nothing that won't be sanded out later. But, everything is sealed. Next is starting to replace the rust in the floor which is more than I was anticipating. The blasting opened up some new spots which I guess in the long run is a good thing.

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Started to repair the driver side floor. I was really worried I wouldn't be able to get the patch panel behind the already repaired outer rocker. But, I think it will be ok. I sort of discovered I probably did some of this out of order, but had to do what I had to do.

Haven't heard this one before. I might have to borrow that in conversation. Lol... Still have some final welding and grinding, but the large driver's side patch is just about done. Next up is the toe kick and the outer rocker where the door seal will go. I think I will have some panel adjustments need to get that line straight where the toe kick meets the floor, but I guess that is all part of using replacement panels and being new at this. New video should be out this weekend. |

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Got started on the toe kick area. Going to replace the top section first to establish a straight line to then adjust the floor piece that is a little out of whack. When I removed this piece, I found a little more rust in the lip of the side wall of the cab where it meats the floor. Not sure if I am going to be able to just fill the holes or if I will have to make a tiny patch. It is no more then a half inch wide. Will see the more I clean the area up.

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Got the toe kick pieces cut and tacked in. Everything still needs to be completely welded and the welds ground, but the patches have been made and fitted. I also adjust the AMD floor patch to fit the original seam. Had to put a small pie cut in there. Now I need to move on to the curve in the door opening and the lip where the seal will sit. That will rap up the driver side floor rust.

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Finished up the driver's side floor and outer rocker. I need to finish all of my welding and grinding to wrap this up. I am sort of wishing I had removed the entire rocker and just replaced it. The lip for the door seal on the replacement panel isn't the same as the original. It is a little shorter. I don't think it will be that big of a deal. I was able to make a cut and adjust the panel where it meets the toe kick and cut a wedge to make up the difference. But, trying to adjust this lip might not be worth the effort given where it is located. Should have a complete video out tonight.
Next is the area above the windshield. |

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Thanks. All those patches took me forever. I was hoping to be able to get some paint on the inside before the weather turned to chilly, but I think I missed that goal. I still have a more to fix before it is ready. Oh well, not going to worry too much about it. Gotta keep moving forward.

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Started to work on the area above the windshield. I took a piece from my parts truck to try and patch in the rusted area. My patch needed to go to where the mirror would be. My truck didn't have a mirror, but the parts truck did. While it is just a a couple of holes drilled in the roof area, I thought I would patch in the mirror area with the factory holes since the patch had to go that far anyway. Still working on getting the patch to fit before welding both patches in.

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Making great progress. You had a decent roof there, ours was in much sorrier shape. Is it only the interior, or will you have some patch work on the exterior too?

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Right now, it is only the interior that I plan to fix. There is new seam sealer or maybe just caulk in the drip rail across the top. I have not scraped that out. So, there could be an issue there. The outside above the windshield appears to be good. I don't have any holes there. I am hoping this is all I will have to do at this point.

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Thanks. I have to give credit to The Astronaut who is a frequent poster. He gave me the idea and some pictures of his. It worked great for when I painted the areas that were blasted. I am also using the line that doesn't run through the extra set of filters when I use my tools and I am not getting any moisture out of the tool. And, because I had the fridge and with the cost of copper, I saved a lot of money by not buying all those lengths of tubing.

Re: Hank - 63 C10 Build
Finished up the area above the windsheild. Need to do some finish work but the patches are in. The roof panel moved a bit more then I expected. Once I cut out the part to be replaced, it sort of bowed up a little. I guess all of these pieces are under some sort of tension and when a part is removed, they shift a little. I ended cutting the the patch a little short and had to fix that. Next up is a small area on the passenger side floor.
New video should be out in the next day or so. |
