1960 wheels with hubcaps, future disk brakes advise

Couple of what I hope are easy questions

I like the look of fairly stock wheels and tires with hubcaps. With my 1960 stepside I was thinking about black steel wheels resembling original with some dog dish type hubcaps. I like the white hubcaps painted to match the grill and front bumper. I understand the hubcaps I'm looking at might not be the absolute correct year but I do like the look. Or something similar is fine too.

Aftermarket everything is fine.

*Can anyone recommend where to get these from? Will all Wheels accept hubcaps or do I need to make sure I buy them from the same supplier?

I would like a disc brake conversion in the future, will a 15 in wheel accommodate this or do I need to go up to a 17 inch wheel so I don't have to buy all new in the future?

Thank you in advance. I'm adding a couple of photos of ideas of what I like.

If anyone has a link for wheels and the hubcaps I would appreciate it. Just doing a general search comes back with some pretty confusing results.

I read other threads here which answered some other questions I had.

If you want 15x6 steel wheels and you want to run hubcaps and disc brakes in the future you need to find 70's gm 4x4 6 lug wheels. They were on Chevys, GMCs, and Jeep wagoneers for sure, and maybe more.

You can identify them by the 6 inch width, 6 lugs and the three nubs on the outside of the wheel center for the dog dish hup caps.

Good luck finding a set, they are getting harder to find.

I believe the 71-87 K5/K10 wheels with 4 nubs are what you will want to look for.
3 nub 6 lug wheels generally indicate pre-71 drum brake wheels without the inner profile that accommodates a disk brake setup.

Re: 1960 wheels with hubcaps, future disk brakes advise

Thanks I appreciate the info. Do they not just make new aftermarket ones now?

They don't have to be originals I just like the look of The originals with hubcaps.

And I do like 15 in because I like more tire than wheel, but if it would be safer to go with a 17-in just for clearance for future disc brakes I'm not opposed to that either.

Keeping in mind maybe it will be a disc brake kit or maybe be a front axle, I have no idea.

I do know after rebuilding the drum brakes and new master cylinder it barely stops it at idle Plus just in the driveway. I just had it moving under its own power a few days ago for the first time in many years... My idol may be a little high it was about 850 at a Chevy 350... Did not want to stop so I was thinking future disc brakes for confidence.

Wheel Vintiques sells a Series 62 wheel in 5-lug.
Not sure if anyone makes a new 6-lug version that will accept hubcaps in a 15” wheel.

Re: 1960 wheels with hubcaps, future disk brakes advise

The inner rim profile dictates whether a 15 will clear calipers or not. The original wheels almost always had a 45* slanted inner barrel that won't clear calipers without using a bolt on wheel spacer.

Some later 60s wheels had three nubs but had inner barrels with a 90* step that would clear calipers, so you can't go by nub count alone. There were also old aftermarket chrome reverse six lug three nub wheels that have 90* inner barrels. The later 4 nub wheels with straight cut slots around the edge of the center all have 90* stepped inner barrels.

I used stock 45* slanted drum brake rims on the front with 1.5" bolt on wheels spacers when I switched to discs, but I also have 8" rear wheels so the added front track width is matched by the wider rear wheels. Just using front spacers would look weird.

Sounds like going with 17 inch wheels might just be the safest bet... I like the look of your tires filling out the wheel well... I agree I would probably go a bit wider just to fill that out...

Again black steel with appropriate ish hubcaps would suit me fine....

I appreciate all the info it makes more sense now with the 45 versus 90° slant
