No RUB code in the parts book for 1984, can you post a picture of it?

That code doesn't show up for 1984 trucks, according to the GM parts catalog. RUB was used from 1978-80, 2.73 ratio axles. You could pull the cover and check the date stamped in the ring gear and also verify the ratio at the same time.

And change the fluid.

And change the ring and pinion to a 3.42 ratio.

(I'm kidding.)

(Mostly).

Re: 1984 Chevrolet truck rear axle identification

Thanks for the information. The guy told me it was out of an 84. I haven't seen it yet. I wanted to know the ratio before driving 50 miles. Your correct, it's not an ideal ratio. I have a 3.73 stock rear axle now with a Saginaw 4spd. A 308 would have been nice.😀 I don't know if this ratio will work. Thanks again.

I worked at a manufacturing plant and this stuff happens.

Re: 1984 Chevrolet truck rear axle identification

The engineering specifications guys were not above a bit of humor; we had a little firecracker that had design/release responsibility for the engine cooling system. Her name was Pam something or other.

The specs guys took the biggest radiator she was responsible for and assigned the pick code "PAM" to it.
