1968 C10 Front Bearing Replacement...
Gosh I'd like to get it done in a day.....
Man, I wish I could get away with just slappin a new outer into the old race. I don't think I'm going to be that lucky though. I've done a job like this 40 years ago... There'll be a lot of bangin and a lot of grease mess.... Hope it doesn't take me have a day to get the brake drum off........ And the Races oh those Sun of uh Guns.....punch them from behind from what I remember! |

This punch in the link below makes getting the races out a little bit easier.
It has a different profile on the end which help it stay in contact better. Link: https://www.amazon.com/Mayhew-24549-...114119916&th=1

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() On most Bearing races a Person has to remove there is a wider lip to drive the bearing out. Some are casted with two cutouts , this gives room for a regular punch. Then some of them have a Small lip that is hard to hold a regular punch on to get a decent hit to remove it. The way I determine this is, I take a shop rag or an old tee-shirt cut into sections. I use a Screwdriver or long prybar to poke the rag thru. That gets rid of the majority of the grease. Then I use some brake cleaner to clean and dissolve the rest of the grease. With this being done you can see what you are working on. Hope this helps.

Re: 1968 C10 Front Bearing Replacement...
Got it done in about 3 hours (1 wheel). Went smoothly, brake drum came off with a few whacks of the mallet and there were openings behind the races to fit a punch in, I didn't have to catch just a lip, I could get in right behind the race to beat it out. Most of the time spent was cleaning/cleanup. The inner bearing was bad!
*A little side note: I saw some guy on YouTube say that the brake drums didn't have an opening to access the brake shoe adjustment wheel, yep my brake drum was hacked open! Oh, and I know that a haiku is some sort of Chinese poetry, maybe I'll Google it..... |
