Dropped shocks

Can someone explain to me if a stock shock has a collapsed dimension of 10 inches, how can an advertised lowered shock for a 3 to 4 inch drop have a collapsed dimension of 9 inches and not bottom out?

Re: Dropped shocks

The shock is on a different motion ratio than the spring, which is on a different motion ratio than the wheel.

Typically, on this suspension, a 3" drop at the wheel is actually 1.5" at the spring, and probably (but I have not measured) 1" at the shock.

Re: Dropped shocks

Thanks, that makes sense, but some of those dropped shocks have the same collapsed dimension as the stock ones.

Re: Dropped shocks

Yes, I've noticed that too. I've seen "drop" shocks that are longer. Some people don't math well.

This is exactly why I run stock length shocks & tweak the mounting bracket to suit. The factory shock travel is already limited so I don't like reducing it @ all.

In the case of a C10 front suspension, I relocate the upper bracket higher to maintain the stock 'mid-travel' height.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: Dropped shocks

I'm going to find out. I just ordered a set of shocks that are 9 compressed and 13.5 extended for a 3" drop. The rear ones are 12" just like the stock ones. For a 4" drop. We shall see. Advertised for a 2-3 front drop and 4-5 rear drop. Being a retired engineer, I just couldn't resist testing the math.
