Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Here are a few more items I got yesterday. Had my 68 GMC C20 and my 72 K20 go to a member out in Kansas. Picked up a set of brand-new Ford Mustang seat covers for my brother's car in Arizona. Then finished sanding down the filler areas on drinker side and got them into primer.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
This morning when I rolled out of bed around 4:30am I was thinking about getting things ready to do the first round of filler primer on the outside of the bed. After moring coffee and doing a little work I went to the garage and did some organizing over at the paint table on the side of the garage. That motivated me to get the truck ready also. So over the next two hours I was able to spin the truck around 180 degrees on the wheel skates and get it into position for taking the bed off. It took a bit but finally I was ready to hoist up the bed and get the Devil pushed out to the driveway. In with the body cart and now we can address the areas still on the outside of the bed.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
After getting it settled on the cart and jacked up a little higher with a few 4x4 posts under the bed, I was ready to go. Started with knocking down the surface rust and scratches on the rear bed apron. Then, I moved onto the front bed panel facing the cab. It was in really good shape and needed a few areas smoothed out from scratches and a good once-over to roughen the surface for filler primer. There was a metal mount of some sort dead center of the bed panel. Not sure if I will weld shut or just put some fresh nuts and bolts back in place with a tie-down mount.
If all goes smoothly today, I will try to get it into black filler primer this afternoon so it can dry good for the morning session. Still need to finish prepping the cowl that is ready for filler primer and the tailgate. Would be nice to get all three at once.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Got out this afternoon and applied two layers of high-build filler primer. Sprayed out very nicely and helped reveal a few small areas that need attention before shooting color. It really helps when it is all one color, finding the items you missed. Time to take a break and do something else.
The last picture is a paint mixer that stays on the can. First time using it and it is money. Makes it super easy to stir up things in between coats, and two thumbs up on pouring into the mixing cup, literally no cleanup.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Once all the DTM black primer has cured, it really shows what you missed or what still needs some attention. Little more work to get done on the top edge of the bed rails and a few areas that need a little more feathering out. The goal is to make it presentable and not a show truck.
To get the bed back on the truck, since I need all the room I can get in my limited space I work in. I moved forward with marking areas out on the black primer with a silver Sharpie. The front of the bed panel needs to be fixed first so I can spray it and get it back on the frame, then the other small imperfections can be worked out and sprayed with color. Inside of bed is getting black Raptor liner.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
The areas on the front of the bed panel were all small high spots where something at one time from inside of the bed poked it. I addressed these areas with a body hammer and dolly, slapping spoon, and a PDR hammer and plastic point tool to knock down the area around the high spot. Is it perfect, nope. Although it does look better than it did and will make a good looking bed.
After knocking down the areas I went after them with 400 grit wet-n-dry paper on a hard pad. using warm water with a little Dove soap for lubrication. Wiped everything down again with a clean wet rag, then followed up with some wax and grease remover. Followed up with some SEM black primer, then knocked everything down again with a 800 grit gray Scotch-Brite and soapy water.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Got everything prepped this morning to spray some hinge bolts, cowl, and the front of the bed. Everything went off pretty easily as far as the spraying went. Let it cure for a couple of hours, and then get it placed back onto the truck so I can start attacking the bedsides one more time in a few days. Then I am looking to get the rest of the bed sprayed by the middle to the end of next week.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Back to getting the rest of the bed ready for paint. A few areas need attention in a few low spots or missed areas of feathering out filler. Mostly in the back area of the bed, where the big dent was. Went over the bedside with an acrylic Big block board with 220 grit paper. Cleaned up the mess, then mixed up a little filler to fill the low spots.
Will work on getting this knocked down, then put the truck back on wheel dollies so I can spin it around for the same on the other side.

Back on the wrapping up the driver's side bed body work. Had a few areas skimmed on filler to knock down and feather out with 220 grit. Then put to coats of SEM black filler primer. While I was waiting for filler and primer to dry I moved out the body cart for the bed and set up the tailgate again to get it finalized in the filler and into paint with the bed. Uneventful happenings here, sand, sand, sand some more then prime.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Finally wrapped up the drivers side rear corner that was giving me problems. Solved the issue by using a 12" drywall mud spreader with a flexible steel blade, which made it easier to get the filler on level with the good areas. Then I grabbed a longer 18" hard sanding block and went slow. Sanded down to 220 grit and layered on 4 coats of SEM high-build black primer over it.
Spent about an hour early this morning cleaning up the mess on the floor and moving tools around so I can put the truck back on wheel dollies and spin it around to give the pasenger side attention. Went through and marked all the ares with a silver Sharpie. Circled the areas and marked them with "F" for fill, "S" for sand, and "H" for high spot. Proceeded to work those areas, and get them into filler for lunch time sanding. Getting close, but first more sanding, then sand some more, then rinse and repeat. Crossing fingers to get into color by end of weekend.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
I sold my 68 C20 GMC with the 454 big block motor and my 72 K20 Light Olive with yellow roof truck to a member out in Kansas. He is already doing a great job freshening up the C20 with a new interior. Then we have the issue of Bestview sending me pictures of some nice trucks out there for sale in my area.
Bought a 69 K20 that is all there with cab lights and a build sheet still intact. Also purchased a 1970 Olive K10 that is all original paint and a really good running driving truck. I will be selling the 69 K20 soon, and be doing some minor cleanup on the K10 and driving it. Picts 1,2 are the 69 K20 Picts 3,4 are the 70 K10

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Sunday afternoon got the passenger side into filler primer again. The first coat was to just hit the areas that were repaired. Second and third coats to cover everything again. I let it cook in my heated garage overnight and was able to block everything out on Monday evening. Next up will be to get the truck spun around again and get the garage ready to finally put color on the bedsides.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Finished up the areas for painting on the bed and now waiting for rain to pass so I can push the Devil outside while the bed gets color. I put the hood back up on the stand so I can get that ready while waiting on better weather.
Hood was in pretty good shape. It had a few high spots and a few issues with oil canning over two of the support areas. I attacked the oil canning by using the stud gun in those areas without using the studs. I addressed the high areas by coloring over them with a jumbo black Sharpie marker, then sanding over the marker areas with a hard sanding block with 220-grit paper. It really helps to show the problem areas. Addressed most of that with dolly and hammer, and a slapping spoon.

Thanks, it has been a fun project. The GMC with cab lights will be going up for sale soon. Thinning the herd over the next couple of months.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Just about wrapped up with the hood. Need to get a couple of coats of filler primer on it and block it, then color. The large area on the passenger side of the hood had several high spots and a few low spots, oil canning, and waves like the sea. I did my best to shrink the area down by using the stud gub without studs and then cooling with a wet rag. It was a challenging spot that I worked on over three days, and now I feel like we got it. The use of long sanding boards, guide coat to reveal the lows and highs, and a boatload of patience. This produced a large amount of filler dust while slowly blocking with long boards.
The last picture is material being cut out to build a grill guard for the Devil. The grill guard underneath was removed from another K10 I own so I could use as a template and build exact replication. The main metal is 1.5 inch wide by 3/8 inch thick, the vertical bars are 1.2 x 3/8, and the vertical mounts outside are 2 inches wide. Had a few sets bent up of the ends at the fabrication shop my son works for.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
That looks awesome! A friend of mine in high school had a blue 71 K10 that was this color. It was so clean with minimal options but had a 4" lift and 33s. It was such a nice truck. I never cared for that color until he got that truck.

Yes, one of the K10 trucks I bought last year had a nice grill guard on it. So I decided to have a few sets of the corners bent up at the fabrication shop my son works at. Then purchased enough material to build a couple of them using the one from my K10 as a template. The entire grill guard is made of 1 1/2 x 3/8 and 1 1/4 x 3/8 flat bar. The only part that needs to be bent is the corners.
