65 C10 Hurst Shifter Question
I have a 67 chevelle with a hurst shifter that has the 2 bolts that hold the handle into the mechanism. I bought one for the C10 and it is a little different. Any info on it? I think I'm going to need to put a bench seat handle on it, but can I buy one and then drill two holes for it to mount like my other one? Thanks in advance.

Re: 65 C10 Hurst Shifter Question
I probably don't have the answer you need but I am a little confused about what you are asking. Are you asking how you get the handle out?

Re: 65 C10 Hurst Shifter Question
You're saying that the handle for the bench seat doesn't mount as is to the shifter you're going to use. If it fits into the shifter and still gets the gears correctly, sounds good. Looks like you're going to have to thread those holes, right?

Yeah basically I am asking how to remove that one to replace with a bench seat handle.

Re: 65 C10 Hurst Shifter Question
I think you can slip a feeler gauge along one of the sides of the rod and it will release the clips. I don’t know which side. I don’t have any personal experience with this. I think i saw them do it on roadkill garage.

Re: 65 C10 Hurst Shifter Question
I came across this on another forum. There has to be a video out there somewhere
The shift lever in some late 60's Hurst shifters including the original shifter in my '68 Firebird were designed to be installed at the factory after the body was on the car. The lever was inserted from the top into the shifter where it then snapped into place by 2 spring clips in place of the two retaining bolts found in conventional shifter assemblies. The removal procedure for the shift lever from the shifter was to slide feeler gauges [or equivalent] down from the top to unseat the spring clips and then pull the shift lever out. Most of the shifters that I have seen that still retain the original shifter in this configuration [not many] the thing is so gummed up that this procedure is near impossible. It may be possible to soak it with penatrant, but I would more likley remove the shifter and drill out the spring clips leaving 2 holes when one can use two bolts to hold he shift lever in place like conventional Hurst shifters. I have not seen a Hurst shifter with the lever originally welded in place. |

The one in that video looks just like mine. Thanks for the link. I'm going to give that a try.
