Another oil weight question.....

Hi Guys, I bought a high mileage 2015 5.3 a while back and only have driven it occasionally. Im late to understanding all the info on the late model engine failures and recalls about the late model engines. My limited take a way on these failures seem to suggest GM is suggesting that the very low weight engine oil is primarily responsible for these failures.

My engines service manual states to use 0/20 weight. Would it be wise to up the weight to 5/20 or something else. Or just keep using 0/20.

The truck has 200k miles on it and appears to be the original unmolested engine. Have no records indicating ANY work has ever been done to the engine so may have original lifters still operating as per the AFD system. thanks

I use Amsoil High Mileage 5/20 in my trucks.

I've heard that it was recommended to use 5W-20 to help with the crankshaft bearings (maybe the lifter issue). I use Pennzoil Full Synthetic 5W-20 every 5,000 miles on my 2016 GMC 5.3

2018 GMC Sierra 5,3, 197000 miles Use Full synthetic 5w/20.
Also bypassed the Active Fuel Management through a plug in OBD port.

Thanks all. I will also move up to using the 5/20 weight oil. Im down south and the cold is of less concern than the heat is.

I wanted to add a correction to this thread, I have been running 5W-30 DEXOS oil in my 2016 GMC 5.3. I went down this rabbit hole and could find regular 5W-20 or 5W-30 DEXOS. From what I looked at online GM recommended 5W-20 DEXOS, which I could not find anywhere. I decided that having the DEXOS, GM's oil requirements, was more important than having 5W-20. I also thought that having a little thicker oil wouldn't be a bad thing.
