Re: home made portable planishing hammer build
part of the firewall/dash air hammer job was also to get room for the electrical plug on the wiper motor

Re: home made portable planishing hammer build
this is how I determined my motor shaft angle. threaded rod squished through the opening for the wiper arm shafts with a digital torpedo level laid across the rod
then i used a cut off bolt and a "longer than stock" nut on the motor shaft, along with the digital level the mounts I made for the motor, held in place with hose clamps seen in a previous post, allowed me to adjust the motor angle until it matched the wiper arm shaft angle. then tack the mounts to the motor mounting tubing the rubber/foam wrapped nub on the lower edge of the motor needed to be supported, now that I had the engle figured out, so I made a quick bracket and welded that in. it is pretty solid now the donor motor crank lever is too short, compared to the original truck motor lever, so I will need to figure that out and make some new linkage. i will use the donor lever since it has provisions for both side linkages on one point, so I will use the donor linkage rod ends for the ball mount compatability and their antivibration/noise properties. both side linkages will mean the wipers don't move like the original ones so i will see if I like that. I may change my mind on this segment after seeing it in operation, dunno, but for the amount i will actually use the wipers, that may not bother me much. doing this means there is less interference possibilities between the linkage rods as they pass by each other when the motor goes roundy roundy, lol last pic is with dash partially assembled and seats in so i can start and move the truck around. Dec is a busy month for me so I may not get too much truck project work done |

Re: home made portable planishing hammer build
sorry, i thought I had posted a pic of the motor being mounted with the hose clamps being used for angle and shaft centering adjustments. I guess i didn't post those. anyway, here is a pic in case anybody is lurking here wondering how it all got worked out. the blue thing on the motor shaft is just a piece of cereal box i used for mocking up the length of the original truck motor lever, to keep perspective of clearnce needed.

Re: home made portable planishing hammer build
in the last post you can see how i needed to bash the firewall for electrical plug clearance. when I was adjusting the angle it quickly became apparent that the motor, when mounted this high, would need more room above it. more bashing required, lol
the grille ahead of the windshield will need to be raised a little to clear that bump. i may close the driver's side of that grille anyway. if not the bump required will just be in the middle section of that grille and may even look natural there |

Re: home made portable planishing hammer build
heres a couple pics of the bump, from side and front view. also a quick interior shot to see what the dash looks like when installed. these are donor parts from the mock up interior so they are quite dirty. i have some nicer stuff that won't smell like cigarette smoke or a welding shop, lol

Re: home made portable planishing hammer build
Keep up the good work. Love reading it.
How well will the wiper sweep line up? Did you see the similar 'king stretch' 1955 task force (doesn't look like a 3100) pickup on BaT? https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...g-cab-stretch/ Last edited by FinnDiesel; 12-04-2025 at 07:54 PM. Reason: text |
