Loud speedo cable - fixed? - now silent, but not working

I finally had time to work on my loud speedometer. I watched a couple videos and thought "this will take an hour." Which was probably my first mistake. My speedo cable has been cleaned and greased, but when I put it back together, it now doesn't do anything. No sound. But no turning the speedometer readout either.

I detached from behind the cluster, pulled the cable out through the cab, then used brake cleaner to clean, then lubed up with grease and replaced. Then I snapped it back into the back of the cluster.

One thing I realized is that the cable is not long enough to get all the way to the transmission. So it must be multiple parts - not sure how that works. Did it not re-connect at the halfway point? Is it possible I'm just not getting it set right on either end?

Any ideas? And would love to know what I should try next. If I get a new cable, do I go for the entire length? Or just the part that goes through the firewall?

Please help. I have a bunch of other stuff to do, (like install my new dash) but I want to get this sorted first. Thanks to all the helpers out there!

Re: Loud speedo cable - fixed? - now silent, but not working

Update: I still need help.

After disassembling the lower cable and cable housing, cleaning it, and putting it back together - I can confirm that the end near the speedometer spins.
However, I could not get the speedometer to work at all. So I unplugged, then replugged the cable to the cluster multiple times. Still no work.

So then I dissassembled the entire cluster, removed it from the truck. Took the speedometer out of the cluster houseing, and installed it onto the end of the cable (with no locking clip because that is part of the cluster assembly. Went for a test drive, and was able to get it to work -but it still made a lot of noise. The noise is a loud rattling sound. Not a high pitched chirp like I've heard before. Here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/zAp4GCIUMLQ

1: Any ideas about this noise? I don't think it is the cable. Is there something you can do to the speedo guage itself?

2. Why won't it work when I plug it into the back of the cluster? Is the clip not doing its job? what else?

Re: Loud speedo cable - fixed? - now silent, but not working

Update: When I drive without the speedometer attached, there is no noise, and the cable is spinning away.

Also, when I look in through the back of the speedometer, there is a good amount of grease where the needle would plug in. Is that part of the problem? Should there be no grease?

Is there a way to "oil" the speedometer or otherwise clean it to make it not rattle?

After watching the video it sounds like the cable is slipping in the cluster. Is the cable tight in the back of the speedo or is it loose? Do you have another speedo to test it with? There are still the odd c10's in the local junk yards.
