1972 Special Paint
I recently purchased a 1972 Blazer from a buddy (he is a member on here). It has Special Paint on the SPID. Just curious if anyone has seen this color and what GM may have called it or any other vehicles that came with this color. I’m guessing it would have to be some sort of color GM offered in 1972. It does not look orange or red to me. Almost like a blend of the two or even some pink in it. Just curious how special paint worked back then and if anyone else has seen this color on a 67-72.

Re: 1972 Special Paint
A few years back I bought a 54 sedan delivery that was in primer, as I got to looking it over on the cowl tag on the firewall under paint it said Special. As I got to sanding on it I found some of the original paint, it was what those of us here in MI call county orange. It was apparently a county vehicle ordered by the highway dept.

Re: 1972 Special Paint
We know of the original owner and it was just his personal vehicle (he was an engineer). No extra holes for equipment or anything like that. He passed away a while back so no way of asking him. It’s not DOT Orange. Hard to describe but more like tangerine. Has a bit of deep glow to it.

Re: 1972 Special Paint
You might look at other GM colors. It wasn't uncommon for someone to order a color from a Pontiac or Cadillac for their truck.

Re: 1972 Special Paint
It's hard to tell on the screen but, it looks like a worn Mandalay Red from the 50s and 60s.
You should be able to take the glove box door, or a clean small painted part to your local auto paint store for a scan, to narrow it down. |
