Apparently used for medicinal purposes by the very early natives. Ran an Image search and it returned this...

The image shows a red-belted bracket fungus, scientifically known as Fomitopsis pinicola. This common polypore mushroom can be identified by the following features:

It is a woody, perennial conk that grows on dead conifer logs and stumps.
The fruiting body is typically hoof-shaped with a dark brown to blackish-brown top surface and a varnished, orange-brown marginal band.
It is inedible due to its tough, woody texture.
Historically, indigenous peoples used it for medicinal purposes and as a tinder to carry fire.
