Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I'm learning a little more about the car, it has a 3 speed overdrive and double hump heads. With the tires flat and on the trailer the doors won't open. I need to get some rollers. I'm going to take the seats out and clean out the inside once it warms up a little. It's missing the intake but the back of the back seat is laying between the front and rear seat so maybe it will be there, doubt it. The car has not ran since the late 60s, the question I'll have to figure out is why...

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I see I'm not the only one having issues with renewing my subscription. I attempted to send a PM to Liz, but I can't because my PM box is now overfull.... I did reply in that thread, so hopefully, Liz and/or Josh will see it and get it updated.
By her reply to the OP in that thread he apparently lives in the ice storm area, so it may be a while. Hope all 'yall in that path are getting by and please get it all working again soon. I need to travel thru that area next week and have a hotel reservation for Feb 1 in Tupelo...
I'm well aware of what that crap is like, living in east central MN area. Hoping everyone affected is safe and has a warm place to go, if you've lost power. I've had a generator for 27 years because we lose power from storms all too often too.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Got a first penny deal at Home Depot actually ended up paying nothing as I was in the self checkout and I used a $20 and I guess they are rounding so it spit my 20 out as change . Nothing special just a steam brush grill cleaner

If you sign up for their rewards program, when they put in your phone number the discount pops up before they ring up the sale. Plus, you some money for every hundred you spend; they'll sent you an email. Print barcode and redeem.

The penny deal happens when an item has been clearance marked down for a period of time the item is supposed to be moved off the sales floor and marked down to a penny I guess for inventory purposes. Sometimes they don’t get them off the sales floor before the markdown. This was my first time ever snagging a penny deal at Home.

I have seen Facebook posts about people getting insane penny deals on some high priced items .

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I went into HD for a piece of Mahogany 1" X 2" to complete a project. Their prices are sky-high on mahogany, but it would have cost me more to drive further for that stick. It came up as non-existent at the register, so I was forced to take it home for free.

I’ve never seen Mahogany in Home Depot they carried cherry very sporadically and it was pricey . When I did my bar I had to drive an hour and a half to a specialty yard .

There's a company named Swaner's in Burbank, CA that sells wood and products for finishing wood, etc. The surrounding HD stores sell those goods. The HD here also has cherry and birch. I bought a piece of curly birch with a wild figure. It was marked down because nobody was buying it. I made a coat rack out of it.

With the 56 Napco body at the body shop I decided to catch up on another small project. Fixed up another Coleman lantern thats been on my shelf for six years, Model L327 Quick Lite made May 1925. Not too shabby for pushing 101 years old. I've got a dozen lanterns now and finally they all work.

I have 4 that never get used. What do you do to soften the plunger cup?

The pump cup is leather, just use a small amount of neatsfoot oil, not too much or the checkvalve could get gummed up. https://www.Oldcolemanparts.com has new pumps and leather cups if yours are too far gone.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

When I began rebuilding my Chevy long ago, I built two carts off a guy's Youtube using brackets that take 20 screws each x 16, wholly overbuilt but OK.

Never liked them, no use for "carts" anyway. They looked too top heavy- don't trust casters around chevy, even with locks. What I get for looking instead of building what I need.

I converted to benches reusing the plywood, and yeah 20 screws a bracket- about 400 screws all told.........They're 6.5" shorter than carts with same storage space - added 3.5 depth for 2x4 back stop, the top one straps the benches together. They're not moving now unless a bull gets loose in there.

I have German Shepherds for instance, the truck is blocked off on all sides, including a front pony wall. What a mess, I tend to do that...When I built the Chevy everything had to be put away between assemblies or I'd absolutely lose it.

Edit: Looking at the picture the new benches appear sloped down to the rh side, oh no! Everything else in the image looks level, which are or very close, including the truck W 4x2.5 suspension. My BA steel ruler says the top corners of both are within 1/8th from the floor, this image is evidence of the matrix..........Nah, it's a dip in that area of the floor.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

After more than 3 decades our wash machine finally suffered a fatal failure. Parts to fix the drum suspension were not available. The wife wanted a side by side set up instead of the stacked arrangement we had. Unfortunately after shopping around we discovered that in the years since washer dryer units are deeper than they used to be unless you want the most basic stacked unit.

The unfortunate part has to do with our laundry area wasn't built for these deeper units. The old one was 27 inches deep and the new ones are 30 inches deep at a minimum not counting the space required behind them. Our laundry has nice French doors that I did not want to lose so I explored a different solution.

I hoped I might be able to trim the studs in the wall behind the units to gain the needed real estate so I drilled some holes to see if that was possible. Peering into the wall revealed that there were two walls back to back and I wouldn't have to worry about how the alterations would affect the other side of the wall. (Photo #2)

Once the sheetrock was removed it was apparent that the reason for the two walls adjacent was to allow the drain pipe to miss the foundation. Nothing to be done on th washer side except remove the two layers of 3/8" sheet rock and replace it with a piece of 1/4" hardboard.

On the dryer side I bent some sheet metal and fitted it to the studs. This gave me 5 1/2" of clearance between back of the dryer and the sheetmetal between the studs. Plenty of room for air to circulate. I also cut one stud back 2 inches to give me room to access the dryer vent hose. I did have to cut one side of the door frame for clearance. That was mostly to allow us to have a catch pan under the washer just in case. That was 4 days of my life, not working on my Blazer but, it has made the wife quite happy.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I'm still here, lol. Been super busy with other things outside of the old truck. Lately have been busy in the shop putting together a fresh 409 W motor for our 61 Impala. Should have had it in the car by now, but the flu has knocked me on my butt for the last 3 weeks. Everything is unhooked and I just need to hook the cherry picker to it and yank it. This new motor is pretty much a correct early 62 409hp motor and really wake the car up over its tired 280hp tri power 348.

Cool project. If I'm not mistaken those 409hp motors were 12:1 compression requiring 100+ octane. What compression ratio did you go with for today's gasoline?

10.5 to 1 so still need premium at the pump. Also did a custom cam grind that would still have the thump it should have to the ear, but still clear the pistons with the lower compression. But still have the flow of the big heads and the larger exhaust manifolds. Luckily the block was still std bore and a 10 over was all it needed.

I've been working on the Jeep engine getting it ready to fire slowly but surely.
Today I ran across a problem with the oil pump install/orientation which I also discovered is a very common mistake.

While installing the distributor I could only after many attempts get it to drop in 180 out, so I started looking for the reason.
I then noticed the key on the bottom of the distributor shaft that mated to the oil pump was offset. I then searched the service manual and YouTube and discovered it was not only offset, but the keyways both the male key on the distributor and the female keyway on the oil pump actually had a slight taper to them so they only go one way.
It's very hard to see this taper with the naked eye but a caliper showed it to be true. Long story short I had to drop the oil pump (3 bolts) right behind the exhaust pipe in the third picture and re-clock the oil pump shaft 180. Distributor dropped in just like it sposed to was after that.

I'm glad these old motors were built to be easily repaired in the field!
