Its been hot this winter in So Cal

I’m about a mile inside the north San Diego County line, and this “winter” has been so warm that two of my low‑chill peach trees actually flowered on February 4th. Several other varieties are trying to push blooms too. I’m already watering the trees and the ground cover on a large graded slope as if it were early summer.
It’ll be interesting to see whether any fruit actually matures this year. The critters—who usually get far more of the harvest than I do—might be in for a disappointment. The avocado trees are loving the temperatures, but they’re gulping water. A rat even pulled off an avocado the other day and set it on top of a chippings pile to ripen.
The rats, squirrels, and chipmunks have their apartment complexes set up, and they compete with the deer in the chaparral around the grove. Meanwhile, the foxes, coyotes, bobcats, and even the occasional cougar have their kitchens arranged to keep the rodent population in check. It can be quite a show.
I’ve been here 10 years, and things usually stay in balance, but a year like this might stress the norm.

Re: Its been hot this winter in So Cal

Here in KY, we are below average for temperatures so far this year and above average on snowfall. It seems that cold air keeps coming down from Canada and keeping the eastern US cold, while the west is stayer warmer. It was in 12 this morning here in KY, but in the 70's today in Montana, I noticed.

It's been brutal in Ct. this winter. Single digits to below zero most mornings where I live. Last snow storm dropped 20" on us. Coldest weather of the season coming this weekend with wind chills at 25 below zero. 45 mph winds and 3 more inches of snow.

I’m not doing maple syrup this year . One the temps are just to cold and two I can’t get to the trees we got 30 inches last storm on top of the 12 inches already on the ground . No melting so far

I have to go get 50 gallons of diesel for my daughter her fuel oil company called and said they suspended deliveries because they can’t get fuel
Oil . Their depot gets its oil from a barge shipping. Hudson is froze over and the ice breakers are only cutting a channel in the center . So no deliveries of oil she called several other companies most aren’t taking any new customers and the one that said they would can’t get there until end of the month. I’m going to use the 54 gallon tank I bought for the 68 . I haven’t mounted it as of yet so I’ll put it in the Dodge

Re: Its been hot this winter in So Cal

Native Californian here. I did a 2 year project in St. Louis/New York giving me some basic idea of cold weather. Weather was a constant wonder to me at the time but towards the end I was already frusterated with the cold and summer humidity. I know all the retirees I've said goodbye to, moving to places like Kentucky, must be questioning things a bit.

I went through 250 gallons of oil in 3 weeks. Thermostat upstairs on 63 and downstairs on 66. Fancy thermostat downstairs shows that it was calling for heat 14.5 hours of the day. With a total of 3 zones including the hot water it seems that the boiler just runs constantly.

She has a pellet stove so she’s not using much fuel oil well relatively.

We’ve been below zero multiple times this month and November and December were very cold too. This is the first time in years I’m going to need to bring in more wood . I usually burn 5-6 cords I’ve gone through 7 already . But my electric heat doesn’t come on . Tonight it’s suppose to be around -10 .

Re: Its been hot this winter in So Cal

Here in central MN the temp yesterday was 38 degrees. First time we were above 32 degrees in 20+ days.
Per the weather man the days are getting longer by 3 minutes each day. Yippee!

Re: Its been hot this winter in So Cal

Our weather in southern Idaho has been warmer this year than the last 14 years since moving here I believe we usually have some snow by now and this coming week we may get some.. my irrigation water for my lawn comes from a big pond off the Boise River named Lucky Peak and if it doesn't fill up then myself with all the newcomers to the state in the 10's of thousands needing water for their yard could be a big problem..maybe have to fill the lawn with cement and paint it Green like I seen many years ago in Calfornia

For the most part the green concrete did not stay, and replaced with astro turf. If done in relationship with the rest of the landscape it can be an acceptable look. Or I'm just getting use to it. I looked into sinking a well 10 years ago. It was 30k and no garentee, if needed to go deeper for additional cost. I'd of been money ahead had I done it. Hind sight is 20 20.

Re: Its been hot this winter in So Cal

So just a weather update from MN.
Along the north shore (Duluth and north) 2 feet of new snow.
Here in west central kind of warm 37 degrees this morning.
Now about 2 inches of new snow. Yeah!

I saw that. We are supposed to get a couple of inches of snow tonight. Went from 60º Tuesday to snow tonight and below 0º for Saturday night. Crazy weather for sure....

So north of Duluth near the CAN border 38.5 inches of snow over the last two days. Look up Hovland MN.
Here we only got maybe 2 inches.

Re: Its been hot this winter in So Cal

Been in the 30's this last week at night here in ca for us. Weather has not changed much as I see in my 61+ years on this earth. Sometimes slightly warmer or a bit cooler. Nature at work, not really predictable. Been in socal for over 40 years. Worked in hvac almost 40 years. So I noticed the heat or cold as it influenced business.

Been pretty cold these past few days here in SoCal. Down in the 40's at night with some wind after that storm making it feel even colder, brrrrrr!

Some relief is on the way though.

Re: Its been hot this winter in So Cal

Ya it slammed us pretty hard once again. We got about 14" wet and heavy. I'm still recovering, we moved a lot of it by hand. My quad was a bit over matched. Thank god my Wife likes to shovel. She's a big help.

Re: Its been hot this winter in So Cal

This is looking lke we are not getting anymore snow this year and what we did get was a powdering if that much ,, what this means to us here in the southern part of Idaho is that all of us that have irrigation water piped to our homes ,MIGHT get our lawn water and garden water turned off in the hottest month of July and into August ,, because snow up in the Sawtooth Mountains will not have enough to melt and fill our Lucky Peak Reservoir for the storage we get our water from..for our lawns and gardens AND some farmers Crops
