Whoops, where did that bolt go?
I was removing a very stuck on carb off the 70 K5. I stupidly left the four bolts used to attach the carb to the intake on the top edge of the carb. I had to use pretty good force to seperate the carb from the intake, when I did, one bolt fell into the intake but I was easily able to grab it - unfortunately, I can't find one of the other bolts. I have hooked up a shop vac with a flat piece of cardboard and placed it on the top of the intake carb area to make a good suction and have come up with nothing. I have looked around the floor and the engine compartment to try to locate the bolt but no luck. My memory is it sounded like a bolt went flying, but as one bolt definitely went in the intake the other one could have also.
Any suggestions before I go to the hassel of pulling the intake?

Go to Autozone and get a telescoping magnetic pick-up. Fish it down the intake and each of the runners and see what you come up with.

When I rebuilt the carb on my truck I kinda did the same thing and used a tiny mirror and a flash light to locate and a remote magnet to recover, hope that helps!

Good ideas, my fear is if I don't see it, I guess I will have to pull the intake to make sure it didn't get down a runner further than I can fish or see (kind of doubt it would have gone that far) - hate to remove the intake as I am trying to get running by Friday - but have to do what you have to do.

Better to pull now than wait and see, the 14 bucks for intake gaskets are cheap vs. a new motor......

Yep, that's me. I think I will go ahead and pull the iron intake and replace it - that does two things, lets me try to see if the bolt is in there and it gets rid of a stripped thermostat housing hole. Not to mention gets a better intake while I am trying to get this Blazer running.

I'm with the other guys....I'd pull it.......imagine the cringe on your face when you heard it go thru a valve!!!!! (besides, just think how good the new intake will look!!!!)
Years ago, a friend of mine did the exact same thing......it took about a week before the bolt managed to get wedged in the valve, but boy did it cause some damage!!!!! Misled |

Any chance it dropped down in the pain in the rump crevices in the bay? You know, in the motor mounts, down in the front fenderwells, frame rails, crossmembers, bottom of the a-arms.... If ya got the bucks for a new intake, rock on!

Really, what are the odds that it went into the intake...you have all this oppen space, and this one little hole. Since one bolt went in, and was recovered, the odds that the missing bolt is in the intake are like a trillion to one.
I say fire it up. Disclaimer...Andy may or may not be heavily medicated and/or intoxicated....he can not be held responsible for the damage your engine may or may not recieve if he is wrong with his theoretical odds. |

Don't worry, I'm not gonna crank the engine without verifying the bolt is not in the intake - break out the credit card and pick up an intake probably tomorrow - won't mind seeing that iron intake make a door stop.
