Running a parking brake?
How many of you guys who have restored a chassis are running a parking brake setup?
I'm rebuilding my chassis and have been thinking about this. Is it really necesasry? Thanks. |

I am assuming that you are going to have an automatic? I am, and plan on eliminating the e-brake. Mostly because I am going with disks in the rear. I have been thinking about puting an e-brake setup on my output of the t-case....

IMO if I was going auto I would get rid of it, with a manual I'd keep it.

Anybody ever have an auto that slipped out of park(worn pawl), it ain't fun when you're putting a boat in the water. Put the E Brake back on.

You should check your state's regs before removing them. Many (most?) states require them to be on the truck and working as designed.

Here in Texas we are required to have an e-brake to pass inspection.
The disc brake kit I purchased had the parking brakes built into the caliper but I just didn't like the way it was going to look. Also with the air suspension i'm running the two e-brake cables were just getting in the way. I went with this simple pinion mounted brake instead.

Take a look at a parking pawl in an auto transmission before you do away with your park brake. They're not real burly, and a heavy truck on a steep hill is a lot of stress on it. I think if you see it, you'd agree that a brake is needed.
All it would take is a pawl failure, a misadjusted linkage or a bit of inattentiveness to allow the truck to roll and possibly kill someone. Even so, I have seen vehicles slip the pawl. Click..click...click as the car lurched down a hill.

Here in Ohio, it is required to pass the random "safety check".
The pinion mounted units are great. Many years ago they used a drum set-up mounted to the transfer case on Jeeps. This higher mount is probably better suited to a 4X4 (to keep it away from damage) but it depends upon the driveshaft to stop the wheels. The pinion mounted unit doesn't have that draw-back. |
