Cool 12 bolt 6 to 12 bolt 5 rears

I am new to these rear ends, My boys truck has a whiny 12 bolt 5 lug I can get a 12 bolt 6 lug from a coil suspension truck like his for $100.00. Can we take the axles off the old 5 lug and insert them in place of the 6 lug 12 bolt. What is the chance of redrilling them for the 5 bolt pattern. Thanks for any info. The axles are different lengths. It would probably be simpler and about as cost effective to fix the rear end you have. Its not an easy task to switch rear ends. Not just any place will redrill axles. Then I'm not sure if the brakes will line up the same with different drums. I would just fix the one you have.

If you get a 1970 rear, it is 6 lug, AND the right width for your 5 lug axles. But ONLY 70 is like this.

70-82 shafts fit in 70-82 housings, i hear that someone put 82-up 10 bolt truck shafts in 12 bolt before, and worked, so must be same length and spline,

I am not so sure that 1970 is the drop dead date. I parted a 69 C10 and it was identical in width to the 70 and 71 rears I have in the shed. The other idea is after 30+ years you can never be sure what is under your truck. Take a tape measure and make sure. Just check backing plate to backing plate. If it is the same width then the axles will swap out.
