I'm not going to go into detail about my experience buying a set of Boyd's wheels for my street rod but I must tell you that I will never buy anything from them ever again! When the Smoothie II wheels first came out, wheel and tire shops were having problems balancing the tires due to the inconsistancies in the casting thicknesses causing weight imbalances in the wheel...they wouldn't balance out.
I will never ever buy anythng from Boyd Coddington again.

I cant imagine that show is doing anything good for his business. The goofballs are needed to make it entertaining but it seems like they only have 2 guys that know what they are doing.

I have the magnetos in 17". Not that I drive my truck a lot, but so far I'm more than happy with them, plus I got a heck of a deal on the tire/wheel combo from a guy in AZ. For the money, I couldn't beat the look with any other type wheel for the money IMHO,,,

You guys can't judge a company from a TV show. They throw all the goofy stuff in for drama, otherwise, it would be like a bland institutionalized documentary. Same thing with American Chopper, and the tools flying, and doors slamming and stuff. When at the last minute an engine doesn't fit, or something major like that, it's to keep you in suspense. You think proffesionals at that level wouldn't have everything figured out already. It's to make it seem real.

72step I work for an RV manufacturer as an engineering technologist and I can tell you that if they are building a run of similar or identical vehicles then yes the stuff that doesn't fit could be thrown in for drama. When you consider the unique nature and the compressed time tables that these cars and bikes are built around then no it's not for drama. Stuff really happens like that all of the time. The bugs don't get smoothed out until you build at least a few that are the same.

BE very careful on thsoe particular wheels....there was awarning on Boyd's web site about there being some fakes out there ( on E-bay).

It was the Magneato's and Smoothie II's

There was some noticeable differences, but you would have to inspect the wheels very close.

Just my 2 cents

I have a set of boyds and they are pretty decent wheels. For the $$ I am a little disapointed with the "shine" when they are all cleaned up though.

A friend of mine recently interviewed for a job with Boyd at his shop. It is indeed just like the show. I thought the same thing you did until I talked with my buddy. He actually decided NOT to work in Boyds operation because of the constant crap that goes on. You might notice that almost everything Boyd actually tries to work on himself in a project, he actually screws up. As I understand it, he's been bankrupt in the hotrod business once beore.

yea i saw the fake boyd wheels on ebay, the guy that was selling them said they where like boyds but not boyds. i can get a set of those 18" magnetos for $1100. So his wheels are good quality wheels?

I got a great price from "Sport Truck's" website on a set of 20" Cast Timeless 5's. Unfortunately, they are sitting in my living room, because I'm waiting to have my ECE 4/6 drop installed before the wheels go on. I inspected them the best I could without using a balancer, and I'm very happy with the quality and welds. They are Cast, so they are shiney, but not like Chrome. I'd love to find a way to give them a mirror finish before I have tires put on them, but I don't think that it can be done.

Devin - With the right polishing equipment you can make aluminum shine like a mirror. Then the problem becomes keeping it that way.

Unfortunately, I've also heard issues with run out on Boyds wheels. I'd definately order them through a local wheel shop so they can be checked before any tire is mounted and not accepted if bad. My next door nieghbor has a Shelby Cobra GT 427 (from Lonestar classics) and he had Boyd's all around. all 4 could not be balanced correctly and had to be replaced. They were replaced free (except some shipping) but I would think twice about buying them.

Update on his Cobra.....He just bought a Ford BB 513 and had it installed by some Yahoos in Akron OH. Had it home a day & 1/2 and oil pan was full of metal. Took engine back to Akron and Summit replaced the short block. It's back together but I havn't rode in it yet. It looks good, but man the $$$$ he has sunk in to it.

Boyd makes enough money from endorsements...he won't get any of mine however..But he does have some nice looking wheels. I just cant stomach the prices of these damn things

Out here in the land of "Fruits & nuts" people were getting carjacked [like thats any big surprize!] and a dude even got killed over a set of those stupid homeboy helicopters (DUB spinners)!
