A/C Compressor Kicking on When it Shouldn't - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The A/C in my 85 works pretty good. From what I can tell, it is all original and has never been messed with. The only problem is, that when I have the dash switch on vent, the A/C compressor still comes on. I took the climate control panel out and I noticed that there was a rotary switch that controls this stuff. I was hoping that there was an adjustment, but I couldn't find one. Do I just need to replace the switch, or, is there an adjustment that isn't readily apparent?

Mine just started doing that a couple of days ago. I'm assuming that the switch is bad, but I am interested in seeing what other's experience have been.

You may try replacing/wiggling the switch that in on the a/c condensor under the hood (It's the aluminum cylinder on the passenger side of the truck by the firewall). There should be two wires feeding to it. This switch kicks the compressor on/off depending on your freon level, but you may have a bad switch. They range from $15-20 and it's an easy install. Good luck.....

I think that all that switch on the aluminum cylinder does it prevent your compressor from kicking in if it is low on freon.

That switch on the dryer/receiver stops the compressor from turning if the pressure is too high or too low. Mine is new, replaced about 750 or 1000 miles ago.
