Hatch handle question---removal question before I break something!

I am trying to remove the handle from a double wall hatch. I've got all visible retainers and screws off, but not sure where to go from there. The handle shaft(square) is inserted through the round piece w/spring inside the hatch. Its a bit rusty so I've been soaking with a lube/rust remover spray for a couple of days. I can't seem to get loose with minimal force. Am I missing something or should I just use the hammer(carefully) and try to tap out shaft?

I'd hate to break a good hatch and or handle mechanism so help is really needed.
