Tail lamp bezel removal?

Well I have new ones on the way so last night I thought I'd remove the old tail lamp bezels. Man what a pain! Is there a trick to this? I couldn't unhook the trim from the bezel clip, so I ended up ripping and tearing the old bezels apart getting them off. And once off, the little clips are even harder to get out of their holes.

Just wondering what the trick is to these, they are different from the side trim clips. Almost seems like the only way to get them off is to do what I did, and destroy 'em.
