Temp Gauge Troubles

When I take the wire off the sending unit and ground it out, the needle moves 3/4 of the way across the gauge.
(I think this would indicate that the gauge is OK?)
I also put in a new temp sensor between the #1 & #3 spark plug. I did not use teflon tape as not to interfere with the ground. Still the needle only jumps when I turn the key on and nothing after that.

Any other Ideas that could cause my temp gauge not to work?
