drive shaft

I am putting in a single drive shaft in my 71 gmc, the cross member from the carrier barring is in the way, its a long box, and i was wondering if i could take the whole thing out or just cut part of it away? thanks for any help, or maybe if you have some pics on how you did it that would help thanks
