Chevy Van timing 6-250 Help!!

I have a 1970 van which has 2 different timing marks. 1 between the pulleys and one on the bottom of the oil pan. I cant read the one between the pulleys and when I hook the timing light up to the #1 cylinder it doesnt show the mark where its supposed to be??? What am I doing wrong guys??
